About 5.5 years ago, I worked for a company with a 401k program. When I left that workplace to go back to school, I transferred the balance to an IRA account into which I have transferred literally no money since. Also in that time, the company that had the IRA was bought out by a competitor, I have changed addresses at least 3 times, they have stopped sending me email updates, and I no longer receive any physical mail updates.

I want to get the balance of that IRA moved to a new IRA account that I will start contributing to, but find that I am now completely locked out of the online interface, it no longer recognizes my username or ss #, and I can’t get anyone to speak to me over the phone.

There wasn’t that much money in it 5 years ago, but it sure as shiite wasn’t nothing, and I’d like to see what happened to it and resume building for retirement. How do I find my money?

Search your email for the last updates you received. There should be something saying if they were moving to a new company, merging with a new brokerage, etc.

What was the last brokerage your account was in?

Have you checked to see if they moved it to Bank of America? I know they were moving a few ML things under the BoA header back in 2019, not sure if yours would have been included.

If you have the account number, contact the institution your funds will be transferred to going forward. They should be able to help you.

Do you know anyone that used to work there? You can call the old companies HR and they should be able to tell you who has the account. Then go from there.
