I need a new AC condensor. I'm only planning to stay in my house another five years. The government has required that use of freon22-based systems be discontinued completely by 2020 and replaced with a new coolant system. Like everyone else, I'm currently set up for a freon22 condensor.

I can replace the existing condensor with a freon22 unit for about $2,500.

To go to the new coolant system would cost anywhere from $5k to $9k (cost is higher because I would have to change out coils, etc.), depending on the make/model installed.

Since I'm only going to be in the house for about another 5 years, does it make sense to spend the extra money to install the new collant system, or should get the cheaper freon22 unit?

Seems rather high. I replaced my AC system (condenser and coils, not air handler though) in my old house 2 years ago for $3500. I didn't get the cheapo unit either, that price was after an upgrade to 14 SEER with R410A.

When I built my new house this year got EVERYTHING done (Heat, AC, Bathroom and stove hood vents) for $5500.

parts have to be available for either 5 -7 yrs. the requirement was that r22 systems could no longer be made after jan 2010. in some cases a piston type valve (txv) can be used to make the systems compatible. i'm not a a/c tech so i suggest that you get a second opinion or wait for lsu dad to respond. i would go with the r22 system.
