Gold, Silver, Ammo & Dried Food - A Fad?

I often run across people who hoard gold, silver, guns, ammo and dried food for some unknown world event.
Is this a fad? Will gold and silver really go up because of government spending? Do you dry food? Hoard ammo?
Is it me or is this a little nutty?

It was a pretty hot fad 2 or 3 years ago to hoard the food and such. I guess that has passed as you don't hear about it as much.
Ammo is a hot commodity now, but this too will soon settle down.
And yes, most of the people involved in pimping this stuff are nutty.

It's called insurance. It's about as nutty as having fire insurance.
Europe, Japan, and the US plan to print money till there are no more trees.
This could cause the devaluation of paper money. These people are insuring themselves against that.
The food and ammo is insurance against the unrest that will occur when paper money becomes worthless.
It makes since if you think these events will happen.

Guns, ammo, and food I get, if you're preparing for economic collapse. Gold and Silver hoarding is a mystery to me because you can't eat it, drink it,wear it, use it for self defense, or build a shelter out of it.

Gold and silver have been used as currency and payment for goods and services for millennia and are a storage of wealth. In a SHTF scenario where the economy collapses and people no longer find value in paper currency gold and silver will be used as methods of barter and storage of wealth. Gold will mainly be used as the storage of wealth and payment of large ticket items where as silver will be used for smaller purchases and day to day needs.

Gold and silver has been money for thousands of years, so it's the longest running fad in the history of mankind.Plus the coins look cool these days. I'd say get 10k worth (5k gold, 5k silver) and keep it in your safe. Won't hurt.

So what do these people do when their stores run out?
They can't grow their own.
