If one of your parents pass away but you have no relationship with them are the children automatically responsible for these expenses?

Are you asking a moral question or a legal question?

Sure wouldn’t think so.

It would be part of the estate.

In Louisiana, reasonable funeral expenses can and will be taken out of the decedent's estate. So, if the child is receiving any portion of the estate, it may be reduced commensurate with those costs. I'm not aware of any law that would compel a child to provide for the burial of a parent if the estate is insolvent.

With that said, this is about as far outside of my wheelhouse as it gets, so you would be vastly better served speaking to an attorney who commonly handles estate law.

In certain states if you don't claim the body they become property of the state and don't cost you anything.

Depending on the state. Expenses such as funueral, taxes, medical care/expense are first priority.

I think you are asking as a family member of the deceased, are you responsible for the remaining debt. I believe in states like North Carolina, Colorado, etc. spouses are 50% responsible for debt. Most creditors will not pursue spouses, only the estate. I’m not an attorney, but if you have you questions contact your clerk courts or probate attorney.
