Never understood people with this statement.
No way would we be able to hear my daughter crying in our room at night without our monitor.
We still use it now that she is 4. We use it as a walkie talkie, so instead of her waking up in the middle of the night and standing over us to tell us she needs to go to the bathroom, she just tells us through the monitor. Much easier.
I should have prefaced depends on your home but ours have always just been down the same hallway, and we have had no need for a monitor. If they are on different floor or across the house then that's different

I found it nice (especially as a new mom) to be able to see her move in the middle of the night and not have to get up to check on her. Just being able to hear her cry is only 1 use for the monitor. A video monitor can provide many additional advantages

I have the one where you can talk into it and the kids can hear. I love being able to tell them "if I have to come up there one more time...."
Ours has that feature, but I haven't tried it. I think it may scare her right now because she's only 18 months. Friend used it on his daughter when she was like 2, and she wouldn't sleep in her bed again until he took it off the wall!

Not sure if it's been said here yet, but the baby bargains book was a godsend. Has reviews on EVERYTHING you might need, from cost to quality, practicality, safety, you name it. Updated every year.
Get it from amazon or the like.
