Shorted a stock at $26.61 about a month ago. Price is now at $25.15 and I'm down 5.5%. How so?

TIA

I’m gonna guess it’s decay from the interest you’re paying to borrow those shares.

I can't find any detail on it. (fidelity). Any idea where the breakdown would be listed. It's not part of position detail, not on statement, not on history.

26.61 minus 25.15 divided by 26.61 is 5.5%. Are you sure you aren't UP 5.5% and your brokerage is just showing you what happened to the underlying security?

Oh boy

How did you "short" it exactly?

If you bought puts then your option time decay (theta) is going to eat into your profit. If you just shorted the stock, you have to pay borrow fees or interest for shorting those shares.

Probably the cost to borrow rate. I never short anything. I just buy deep ITM Puts.

Yesterday I bought $480 Spy puts several months out when SPY was around 370. The most Ive paid is a dollar over intrinsic value per contract. I got some yesterday at even value. I dont know why anyone would want to short something and have unlimited risk.

Great question...

Is it possible to buy short to open a position. If so I think thats what I did...

that's terrifying

yes, 'selling to open' is an options contract but it sounds like you just hit the '-' button when you were purchasing stock which probably initiates a regular margin short

whatever you did, i'd suggest getting out of it, there should be a 'close position' button somewhere
