Donating a dead vehicle questions

My son's truck is now DOA.
May be worth $2000 in scraps and tires. Donation may be an option, however I don't itemize enough to make any tax deduction off of it.
I throw myself to the board for any advice. TIA

I’d say you answered your own question without giving a make, model, and year.

There are specialty buyers who buy vehicles in this condition to scrap or rebuild. If you have a trusted mechanic, ask them for a referral.

Unless you have the street smarts to know where to sell the scrap and tires, your best bet may be one of those services that will pay a few hundred bucks on the spot.
Back in 2014 or so I had a junky car and the transmission went out;it would have been ~2,500 to fix, so not worth it. Had a company come out and give me a check for $400 and towed it away to junk. In present day they might be giving 500-600.

I donated my first car to the WW2 museum. They send you a receipt once they sell it, but like you didn’t see any tax benefit from the sale.
It was just nice to have someone grab it for free and knowing the money was going to something I cared about.
In 2023 I might have tried a little harder to get some cash for it the way money just seems to burn up

I’d check with a service like Peddle.com, or car brain. or some other group, if I were not going to get tax benefits from a. Donation. If you just want to do some good, get the money from one of those groups and give half to a charity.

Regardless how you dispose of it be sure to cancel the state registration yourself and destroy the plate. You can do it on line.
Years ago a friend donated his old truck to a non-profit and a few years later the vehicle was in an accident and was still registered in his name. He had a little hassle to unwind his liability.
