quote:Just ask Wiki. All they have to do is transfer them through a mixing service and they can remove the taint of being misappropriated (stolen is such a harsh word).
Can mtgox steal those coins and sell them for usd or are they just lost forever essentially?

First of all, severing taint between transactions is quite easy to do. For instance, a mixing service might have POOL_A and POOL_B. You send your money from ADDRESS_1 to POOL_A and they send you money from POOL_B to ADDRESS_2 (which you also own). So now, the "tainted" coins are sitting in POOL_A, while you control some non-tainted ones that were sent to you from POOL_B in a completely different bitcoin address. Someone else will eventually gets your original coins that were sent to POOL_A. That is a very simple example of how this works. They actually get more complex than that.
If Wiki is correct, which I doubt, then the former MtGOX operators have access to unfettered ownership of a substantial number of Bitcoins.
FYI, Bitcoins are now trading for $450 on bitstamp.com.

It's getting bad. I want to stay up and watch this disaster, but I have class in the morning. I need coffee and a cigarette, it's going to be a long night.

if only you had ever figured out how to short btc

Posted on 2/24/14 at 11:30 pm to southernelite
You actually can short on Bitfinex, but they've probably disabled it by now.

He wouldnt have shorted anyway. If there is problems getting cash from the long positions, shorts would have the same issue.

...No, tell me more.
Seriously though, I don't deal with those types trades at all, neither in magic moneyz nor the actual market. I've started absorbing all information that I can about trading/buying in general, and any sort of useful information that you guys through out is appreciated.

I've got it! The exchange takes out a loan from the new First Bitcoin Bank of Cyprus!
We can all buy BTC Bonds.

It wouldn't surprise me if the capital of the Bitcoin bank in Cyprus was the Bitcoins missing from MtGOX. The exchange didn't work out, let's try banking.

Whenever I buy on margin, which I rarely do (stocks, not btc )
, I set a strict stop loss limit price to get out no matter what.

If the margin call is not answered according to the terms of the margin agreement, as in one trading day, the lender takes the collateral, which would be the btc. I have no idea if any exchange allows margin purchases of btc. Nor am I willing to find out.

Here you go!

Wow! There's no way a small btc exchange site can withstand the price declines of btc if they are providing margin financing for any significant volume of their sales.

Laughed at this correlation when I saw this earlier on a finanial webite:
