Check out Above 11 at the end of sukhumvit soi 11. Awesome skyline views. One Skytrain stop or a $3USD cab ride. Make reservations for 2 top on glass for 6 PM to watch the sunset. Reasonable prices and good food.

Soi 34 is 2 stops and has lots of street food if you're up for it.

Thanks for the tip. I ended picking the hotel for the neighborhood. Though river access would be easier, the skytrain to the river makes that point moot.

My bangkok plans are basically:
Some temples
Lampini Stadium for Muay Thai
The Market for the future Mrs.
Rooftop bar
Check out the street life / Soi Cowboy or whatever the seedy stuff is

Nice. What's the plan?

We go to the Caribbean a lot so probably use them for flights through Miami to an island or just for the Dulles to Miami and vice versa part of the trips.

Said WTF and did a tiny App-O-Rama last night and took advantage of a United targeted offer for 55k miles and the Ritz Carlton card offer with 140k points and Gold status for Ritz and Marriott. I'm psyched about the Gold status because I stay at these hotels a fair amount and the free room upgrade, free wifi, etc with the gold status will come in handy.

Yeah. Sukhumvit is pretty damn convenient and it's insane the amount of bars/restaurants/street vendors that line it and the side sois.

Lampini Stadium for Muay Thai

Never made it. Talked to some of the locals and they weren't very high on it. Still would have liked to go though.

The Market for the future Mrs.

Amphawa Floating Market was probably the best IMO. But get there early as it gets crowded.

Rooftop bar
Above 11 was my favorite but there was another good one on soi 11 that I forget the name of.

You're staying in the right place . It's everywhere.

Tip: Use Uber.
Cabs there suck if you don't speak Thai. They're always pushing you to go somewhere so they get their free gas coupons or trying to charge you off the meter.

Did you do Chatachuk? Figure do that on way to muay thai as its on the way to new stadium.

Did you jail break your phone?

My work provides me Verizon phone so I'd have to buy a jail broken one. From there it seems pretty easy to buy a data Sim and go. Was there more to it then that?

Haven't needed to go that route on previous trips but would greatly prefer it on this one.

Yeah but briefly just to see it. It's a lot.

No. I got it unlocked by AT&T. Paid for the international data package, but I think all major carriers will unlock your phone now with request if you want to put a temp sim in.
If you're going to be in Thailand for a while and don't need to be immediately accessed by work via your US number, get the cheap sim at the airport. You get unlimited data, text, and a bit of international calling for very cheap. It changes your number but you get full access to all of your emails/data and can call people as needed.

Le Meredien is sweet in Angkor. Get the concierge to help you with a taxi the first day to take you wherever you want to go and then negotiate with driver for the rest of your days. I think I already told you or you know to go get your Angkor tickets the day before you want to actually go. You go after 3pm or something and you get in free to watch sunset and then you have your tix already for the next morning at sunrise which is phenomenal.

Ko Yao Noi is murky, extremely local and nothing really to do. Ko Lanta has beautiful water as does Phi Phi although there was lots of trash in the water there from the tourists. You can go through Krabi if you go to Ko Lanta and we had fun in Krabi. Monkey temple you can climb over 1200 steps, waterfalls, nice beaches, etc.

Sounds like you're set up for Bangkok. Have fun

Ya that's what I read.

Unfortunately I also read that Veriron uses CDMA and the phone therefore can't access the GSM networks used overseas, while carriers like ATT can. So I suppose I'll just pick one up.

Shonuff, off the beaten path doesn't bother me. My main concerns are: not slammed with tourists but good luck with that in December, not too terribly far from Phuket or KBV airports, and lastly access to karst formations/cool formations, islands etc.

Ie my fiancée really wants to feel like she's in Thailand if that makes sense, and I agree. Unfortunately Lanta has no karsts really. But is it a good hopping off point? Should I just suck it up and stay at Railay? Jump off from there.

Looking at Thai beaches for a damn year and still confused as ever. maybe we'll have to chat about it and make a priority list

ETA: thanks both of y'all for the tips. Any reassurance that I'm not mucking it up is a bonus

I get what your fiancee likes, same for us. We lived in Phuket so we couldn't wait to see other local places. Krabi province is great, you'll get your cool rock formations, climbing, jumping, very nice beaches, local flavor, islands, etc. So yes, Railay is a good spot as well. Although, when I looked on Google Maps just now it said Railay Beach permanently closed (not sure, but look into it as there will be plenty of other beaches in Railay). They are still going to be busier in prime season but less than Phuket for sure.

Eta: Wife just said go to the new Marriott rooftop bar in Bangkok if you have time, it's great, just opened a couple years ago.

Have 5 days at an island so there has been some consideration of Ko Lanta for bluer waters.

Spent 5 nights on Koh Lanta at Lanta Castaway a couple years back. We had a great time. Lanta was more off the beaten path...Much less of a Spring Break/overcrowded atmosphere than Phuket (from what I was told). Not sure if you dive, but Lanta is close to some very good dive sites. Food was excellent and dirt cheap there. We did not do too many activities on the island, as we spent most of our time diving or lounging.

The beaches were nice, but to get the very blue water you had to boat out to the islands - at least from our area of Lanta. The picture below was our view from the beach to give you an idea:

Thanks guys, all really helpful. Appreciate the time and effort on the tips. Sorry I didn't answer sooner, entertaining visitors this weekend.

It's pretty clear we just got to take a shot at what we think is best. I'm sure, for the most part, it will work out whatever we do.

Holy shite United almost botched my honeymoon.

Try to make it short. I was a few thousand miles short while booking (stupid family wedding I was forced to go to). So I booked my fiancee no problem then myself, confirming I wanted to purchase the difference.

I kept calling every 2 days to confirm it was going to process which was 3 times. They kept telling me they had my CC info and it would. Well, you know what happens next. ANA boots me off my flight leaving my fiancee on it and me with segments that didn't connect all over the place. Since no award seats are available and apparently, United can't even make a simple phone call and beg (What are alliances for anyways right?) I was screwed. Customer service was awful and took 5/6 hours last night.

Anywho, my daft award abilities found me a similar itinerary will dates just a week later, so honeymoon was saved. I finally got a rep finally threw me a bone and booked me X on United domestic legs that weren't open on either end so we're all good. I must have been grumpy. Besides domestic from MSY to LAX and EWR to MSY, we're both Business/business first every where else. yay!

Some things I learned. Have them not only note the account, but ask for the LINE NUMBER that note is on. Apparently the notes are a jumbled mess, and these reps weren't noting any thing, not the miles purchase, and not the multiple calls last night. Which was important since I was promised I'd be refunded my fiancee's flight points for free instead of $200.

Had to explain every thing every time and convince them I deserved a fee waiver each time. So there's your "Tip of the Day"

frick Unit... eh you already know my disdain for them

Glad it worked out for you though. Business class most of the way sounds nice. How many miles total for your trip?

Ya guys it was very stressful. I got hung up on once

I went from exclusively routing via Japan to ICN and PVG. Got 10 hour layover so may check out Shanghai. Don't think I've been to a nondemocratic country before and now im going for military rule and Commies all in one!

The routing ended up at 300,000 miles saving me 20k(think I hit their award fare sale perhaps), but now I have those miles just stuck there for now.

Using 10,000 Starwood via JAL to book 2x Bangkok air to Siem Reap. Probably same or out of pocket to Phuket.

So for all that trouble I got better seats and I get home 4 hours later than previously despite the huge stopover. There about as early as possible too. I'll take it I guess.

Canceling my united card now that I'm booked to avoid the fee that hits later this month. Worked beautifull and I'm pissed at them.

Will cancel mine in July before the 1 year as well. I didn't do as well as you, but I'll have about 85k miles. I'm debating on keeping the US Air or my American Air card as the AA card has foreign transaction fees and the US Air does not. I wonder if the US Air card will work on AA like the AA card after the full merger? (free bags, priority boarding, etc)

BTW, US Air screwed me on the 15k offer you got. Said I was eligible and then said I wasn't a few days later. Will probably cancel on principle alone

US Air card is being converted to an AA card after the merger.

There are so many cards now with no foreign transaction fees but AFAIK they are all going go have a yearly fee attached. The yearly fees don't bother me much. If you make sure to take advantage of the benefits you can generally zero those out.

Glad it worked out. I got money on it that you will end up making changes to that schedule . You'll also be lucky if United doesn't make changes as well. This far out you're bound to have some, so keep an eye on it as flight changes allow you to make changes on the phone for free.

So, I called two months before my annual fee hit to cancel. They gave me 15k miles to keep it, so I had every intention of keeping it, but 2 months later the fee hit, and decided it was silly to pay for it since I have the biz card too. Called to cancel and kept the 15k miles . I didn't mean to game the system in that way, but just didn't feel like paying $100 for a card I didn't need regardless of the miles.

Noob question. Do any of yall pay fee's for a credit card or do you just cancel before the fee hits? I have the barclay arrival plus card and i'm trying to decide if the 90 dollar annual fee is worth it.

I've paid the $450 fee every year for the past 4 years - Very worth it to me as much as I travel.

As long as the yearly benefits to me meet or exceed the fee I keep the card. If you pay attention to your benefits and plan ahead this can be easily accomplished.
