I just got the Marriott Rewards card with the $95 annual fee. Get 5 free nights after 5k in the first 90 days. Seems easy enough.
And 1 annual free night? Seems like there should be a catch.

There is no catch other than the annual free night I believe is only up to a certain category hotel.

I just picked up the Citi Strata Premier as my new daily spender along with my capital one Venture.
For those that fly American, but can justify the travel card, this one seem sto check a lot of boxes for earning AA miles.

Is the Citi travel portal prices comparable? I know they give you the hotel credit, but will that be the only time you use the portal

When looking at airplane tickets, they were comparable to the flights I was trying to get. In fact, for one flight, they were cheaper, b/c they were booking a few different 1 ways which made me a little nervous. I have not pulled the trigger on either of those yet.

Thanks for the info, looking for possibly replacing the CSR

I think it’s a value of 35,000 points annually. It’s still a value that exceeds the annual fee. If you want a nicer Marriott hotel than a Courtyard, it’s still 35,000 points off the price of a nicer hotel.

Credit cards are getting more specialized with their rewards.
We are using the new Wal-Mart card and get 5% reward on Wal-Mart purchases.
We are using the new Amazon card on Amazon purchases and get 5%.
We use our Sam's card at Sams and get 3%. We also use this card at restaurants and get 3%
Finally, we use a different MasterCard on everything else and get 2% on any purchase.
Our cash back balances have grown to almost $10k.

I despise Marriott and how they operate their program. They don't enforce shite on their program hotels.
Flip side is they are everywhere.

What do you mean enforce? Like not offer a room?

They don't enforce program rules regarding benefits against participating hotels. You may not know this, but most hotels are franchised, especially in Marriott. Notoriously hotel owners flaunt the published benefits. On top of that, there's just way too much discretion and sidestepping those benefits. Like room upgrades and so forth. Their program just blows to be honest, but that's just my opinion.

It looks like you can use points for free stays. Are you saying some do not allow that?

They allow it, they also game the heck out of it, especially with regards to free nights certificates that can be topped off. If you have a 50k cert, the hotel will price the room at 66k so you can't top it off. Relative to Hyatt's ease of use its ridiculous, but they have like 20x the hotels so people are stuck.
When your program generates a verb with negative connotation it really says it all ( "getting bonvoyed")

Ah damn. That sucks. So they make you buy additional for the stay and therefore not getting any benefit.

It's extremely rare to get room upgrades even for good or platinum these days.
The credit card certificates etc using the points cap makes it only viable in less traveled places. But can be useful

Yep, ditto for us with the Walmart card and the Amazon Prime card. Also have been using Citibank and Wells Fargo for most everything else for a flat 2%. Just recently also got a Southwest rewards card for the free checked bag.
