Technically he has 2 accounts and will be paying for 2 Fees- which is ridiculous as he will be carrying two balances.
That doesn't bother me at all. I'll just use my rewards gold for gas and groceries and build 2x points on that and use my platinum for travel. The $625 in fees for the two cards are not that much to me when I weigh it against what I'll be getting in rewards and perks.
That was the whole purpose of the thread...to see if there was a flaw to my plan. I still do not see one that is so outrageous that I should cancel one.

You buy $2,000 worth of groceries and gas a month to recoup that $175 fee? This is confusing because 2Xs points- lets say you spend $1,000. The difference is 12000 points which isn't equal to $175.

Groceries and Gas run about $1,500 a month.
eta- more than that during the summer months. Closer to 2k.

You eat too many groceries.

Someone mentioned Delta Reserve earlier. That's garbage and I'd throw that away. You're only getting access to Delta lounges for the same fee and not the same level of benefits of the Platinum.
That would have been me and I have stated numerous times on here that I am the exception to this rule and not the standard. I agree that most people are benefited more by getting the Amex Platinum over the Delta Amex. I fly Delta exclusively, I stepped on 72 of their aircraft last year and 0 for any other carrier. It benefits someone like me to have the Delta reserve over the Platinum Amex.
The other benefits are why I go with the Delta Reserve (MQM boosts, Free Checked Bags, Upgrade Tiebreaker, etc...)

Also, you get companion tickets if you book international business. I've never used them but I will soon as some family will be relocating oversees.
These companion tickets are generally for full fare business and 1st class tickets on certain routes. For example I can buy a discounted 1st class (A) Fare Ticket for roughly $900 but a Business Elite full (J) Class ticket would cost me $2600. Guess which one I am buying?
I'm sure there are exceptions to this rule but I would not include this as a perk unless you are buying these fares anyway because your company is paying for it (and the flexibility).

carries the Platinum over the Centurion because there are no additional benefits besides personal concierge.
That's not true. You get "status" with most airlines, hotels, and car rental carries (also get access to Amex's luxury car rentals). So what you posted is entirely false.
quote:
You only get this if you managed to apply separately twice and not upgrade. Technically he has 2 accounts and will be paying for 2 Fees- which is ridiculous as he will be carrying two balances.
Like anything there are exceptions to the rule. I might be advantageous to someone out there.
Also you cannot "carry" a balance with either of these cards as they are charge cards and not credit cards. They have to be paid in full each month. I am aware that is not what you meant by it but don't want others confused

They will take it off the top. 450-175 and you pay the difference.
As well as prorate the one month.

I'm a huge AMEX Platinum advocate. I've had more shite taken care of for me in the past year and less headaches than I've ever had to deal with.
For example, me and the GF went to New Orleans this past August. We booked some Hotel called Le Richelieu near the French Quarter through Travelocity's Express Hidden Deals. Non-Refundable.
We showed up at the M-Fer and it looked nasty, straight out the 70s. I took a dump in the place, turned in our keys and called the Omni Royal Orleans and rebooked our rooms. They would not offer a refund.
Next day I called AMEX, told them about the issues and how it was "non-refundable". We booked another hotel. I got the entire charge refunded in about 3 days.
AMEX doesn't take shite from other businesses. The fee associated with the Platinum is expensive but it's times like this, I feel like I'm packing a hammer in my pants.
You could post the same thing if you carried almost any of their card... it is not exclusive to platinum.

I am jealous of his groceries

Also I get access to that same concierge & event guides that you have access to with my Delta Reserve card :jump1: :jump2: :jump1:

Not even close. The customer service is completely different experience. I've had disputes open 30 days before resolution with the Gold. 3 days with the Platinum.
Centurion was pretty much taken word for word from the guy I know from Shreveport. Besides, no swinging dick here will ever hit black so it won't matter.
I figure it like this. Reason you get Platinum is for status and the perks. I don't do it for the rewards, which I doubt most even redeem enough to make it a big deal.

I've only had to dispute something once and it was the 1st year when I had the Delta Plat. Disputed on Friday, gone on Saturday new card on Monday.

Probably true except for a few posters on this board

I agree 100% I get more rewards and the perks I use by going with the reserve over the Platinum.
Just curious are your from Shreveport?

BR. Just a huge believe in the Platinum.
I'm a pretty superficial guy though when it comes to my plastic. I got the Sapphire Preferred because it was metal. I don't even use that damn thing once I hit the bonus.
I'm pretty sure that thing has given me like a jillion Southwest flights for free.

I agree and will switch as soon as my situation changes.
I canceled my sapphire last week. There are no benefits to the sapphire after you get the sign up bonus.
If you went to CHS we likely know one another. We are the same age

I'm sure the APR is low on it. I'll keep it for the heck of it. I haven't paid for a flight for about a year. I'm still working off those southwest miles.
One thing about southwest is if you book in advance you can get cheap directs. Like to Vegas. Only place out of NOLA that has an afternoon direct flight from Vegas. I use them for those types of legs.
This was fun but I'm going back to lurking. Till the next AMEX thread....

No kidding? Seriously, what you describe as "savings" really aren't. They are perks. I've been playing the credit card games for around 30 years now and travel quite a bit and the AMEX Platinum card just isn't worth it for someone like me who actually wants to save money. Free booze and room upgrades and concierge services don't interest me at all.
Posted on 1/14/14 at 9:38 pm to Tigris
Those perks are well worth $250 if you travel more than twice IMO. ($450 - $200 airline credit = $250)
Plat will be back... They all come back

Tigris: "I live a boring life."
That's all I got from that.
I'm single. I love perks. I will never be super rich but few amenities here and there...well, sometimes you just enjoy the convenience.
When I flash the Platinum, bitches hair doesn't blow back. I wish it did but it doesn't. I'd be more likely getting a hard on out of Bacon. If it signals anything, I think it's means and stability.
You mention saving money, then why be an AMEX member at all if perks don't matter?
I live my life to enjoy it. My spend last year on it was a measily 42K.
I got rewards points but waiting for a flight delay in a Sky Club with free food and drinks will change your mind. Pronto.
That $450 isn't going to put you over from well off to rich.

This thread got interesting.
I'm thinking I'll downgrade my CSP now that I have a Chase Business Ink Plus and Chase Freedom. With the downgrade, I'll lose bonus spend on travel (not like I'm some crazy jet setter)the 7% year end bonus, and transfer ability, but keep 2x dining.
However, my Ink will let me transfer, I put most of my spend on the Freedom any ways since with Chase Exclusives I get 10% year end bonus with that card, and the Ink covers hotels at least.
With the Ink having $50,000 in possible 5x bonus spend compared to $20,000 with the no fee version, and my manufactured spending habits it looks like this set up makes sense to me.
I just need to run the math against the $95, but I'm almost positive the CSP perks in those spending categories over the year don't equate to $95.

Forgot about that... I should have waited

It's a great card for the annual fee I just don't spend enough on it to justify it. I funnel everything through my Amex unless I am forced not to. The MQM bonuses force me to do this
