Me too...I think next year she gets 22 days. Stretch that with some holiday time and you can do pretty good.

What do you do with the first kid? Grandparents?

Yep. Both of his grandmothers are retired and are more than willing to take him.

LSUAfro, Teddy - any of you have the Ink?

Yep. I have 1 Ink.

28 days total:
1 in Hong Kong
5 in Bangkok
8 in Chiang Mai
4 in Siem Reap
7 in Koh Chang
1 evening back in Bangkok before departure

Sounds awesome. I would love to have 20+ days to explore SE Asia. Really wish I would have been able to travel more in college.

I love Hong Kong. I'd actually consider moving there for work, if my wife would come with me. She's all like "it's on the other side of the world, no". She has a fair point.

I also really enjoy Bangkok the more time I get to spend there. I think Bangkok can be many different things to many different people.

Chiang Mai will definitely be my next 3-4 day stop.

Also, I've found qantas search engine to be by far the easiest to use. Ever given it a shot?

Yeah I've read that and I've tried it, but I just never think to use it.

I've got a couple hundred photos I need to go through from my last Asia run. I'll make a pseudo trip report here one day.

My selfish strategy is that her parents live outside DC so we only see them at most 2 times a year. I figure they'd jump at the chance to watch the future little bugger. We can fly through IAD and go from there.

Or course, this means I need to add a visit where we're all together.

I keep telling myself I'll make it work.

Emirates just added an A380 IAD-DXB route. Sould consider collecting those Alaska miles.

With 1...it's not so hard. That was my hesitation for adding another expense...I mean child. It becomes a bit more work for everybody involved.

You can drop 1 off at grandparent's house, and they're all like, great have a good trip. Start having multiples, and they're like, hey ummm maybe y'all should consider staying home more often.

I think this may add more weight to our idea to have one of our own, and adopt the second.

We can pile up so much goodwill that we can just lean on folks. "Hey we did the noble, hard thing here, all we're asking is you take care of this cute, formerly suffering Cambodian kid for a few days."

I would definitely have to play that card.

My second to last trip on JAL first. Sorry if the pictures suck. I wanted to do a picture post for the board, but caring enough to take good photography is not really my thing plus I stayed pretty hydrated most of the flight.

$400 bottles of Salon. Think we finished both bottles on board.

$200 bottles of Hibiki 17 year that is almost impossible to find in the US regularly. I probably had 4 or 5 glasses after I woke up from my nap. I should've stopped around 3...I think.

Couple hundred dollars worth of catering.

Very nice experience. The bed was great.

Looks awesome. I've never flown business overseas. I have 130,000 AAdvantage points that I'm looking to use for business to either Europe or Asia. Will add to that total this year with a decent amount of domestic travel in the next couple months.

I'd highly recommend traveling one of the Asian carriers(JAL or Cathay Pacific) and booking before the award chart devalues in February. You don't have to fly before then, but just have to book. American awards also don't charge fees for date/flight changes, which makes it great to book tentatively.

62.5k to Asia 1 and 67.5k to Asia 2 in first class. Keep on going to Asia 2 . The premium for moving from Biz to first is well worth it IMO.

Are you saying you can book a flight overseas with AA points and if you change your mind on the dates, you can rebook different dates for no fees?

I thought Southwest was the only airline that allowed you to make flight changes without fees.

On award flights.

But you have to keep the origin and destination the same.

That's correct. Just can't change origin and destination. If you find a shorter flight, or if you decide to spend a night in Tokyo on a 24 hour layover, it's all free.

One day I'll make myself splurge on a premium cabin. I'm always like - 67.5k one way ORRRR 70K RT. Always gets me. The way I look at it - I can save my miles for 12-14h now and use the marginal miles cost on a future trip that would be worth 7-14 days. Not like I have enough days off to use all my miles on x2 trips anyway. And I have a little over 600K AA miles banked at this point. Bonuses + Butt in seat miles. Not whole lot by any means, but definitely more than I can use. And this is just 1 program..

Good information that I did not know. How far in advance can you book reward travel? Have a baby on the way this March. Going to be a long time before I'm doing any long distance travel.

Depends on when the airline opens up their schedule. A generally time frame would be about 330 days out.

Let em go .

With the coming devaluations, I'll be back in biz class. New first class redemption on AA got a little over my comfort level. I'm just glad I'll have gotten to fly first a good bit before they do devalue it, and maybe if I stock pile a good amount again, I can find my way up to the front of da bus.

A huge problem for me is that I need a visa most places I go to. Since we don't have almost any consulates close by, I would need to go to Houston to appear for an interview. Meaning at least 1 more PTO day. So I can't do weekends in Paris/Rome yet, although I would like to do that. Which I'm saving up for once I have my Schenghen visa renewed in a couple of months.

I have at 5-6 trips booked on AA and BA before the charts get devalued. I will take some, cancel some. I even got in on Air New Zealand's Cyber Monday sale with a sub $550 RT to Rarotonga.

Needless to say, I'm setting myself up to get burnt. (by devaluations.)

It depends on the aircraft. Generally - First will always be lie flats. Business would be angled lie flat or smaller lie flat. Also business seats will be a little more close together. First usually closes up to give you your own little compartment/pod.

Usually a 777 has:

16 F in a 1-2-1 config
35 J in a 2-3-2 config
and 180+ in Y in 2-5-2 config

And its the same tube size all the way down so you can imagine the difference in seat size.

Also service will be top in F. In some of the bigger planes that have a bar, I think only F passengers can use the bar area mid-flight. Better food options etc.

One of the other things about F - some airlines will chauffeur you to the airport and on to your destination. With Delta - you have a chance of getting upgraded from F to a PRIVATE JET! Too bad Delta sucks

And then you have the apartments and suites ..

Long haul from US:
Cathay has 6 seats in F
Japan has 8

The cabin has 2 flight attendants and a purser that spends a fair amount of time ensuring the premium cabins.

You essentially have a server at your disposal at all times. The food/drinks in F are drinks that most of us could never fathom paying for in a restaurant. The champagne in a restaurant would run you $700+ bottle. The whisky/scotch would run you $50+ glass. The food would be upwards of $200 depending on what you eat.

You have a lazy boy in first. In biz you almost cut your seat size in half. The selling point of a biz seat is a bed to sleep so that you can get to your meetings with rest when traveling over oceans.
