Amex gold is a good charge card.

I really like the Amex SPG for it's diversity. It isn't a huge signup bonus, but if you don't want to carry a lot of cards in your wallet, it's hard to beat. It can transfer to so many different hotels/airlines.
If you want to only carry one credit card for everyday purchases, it has to be the Chase Sapphire Preffered or the Amex SPG.

I got the offer for 50k points for 3k in spending with amex gold.

Very nice. Did you do any others like the CSP or Chase Southwest?

I thought I'd be beat up over originally starting this thread thinking it was kind of stupid. Never imagined it would go 10 pages.

The traveling would be an extra burden/blessing
I completely agree. It's a give/take. I travel for work maybe 4-5 times per year. It helps break up the monotony. I think I'd be happy with about 8 to 10 trips per year.

The consensus from what i had read was that the amex gold was the best card for day to day spending. Did I miss the mark? Should i get the 50k points and then spend something elsewhere? Im military so my 3k per month on the card is my limit.

My credit score is a 790 and I dont have a problem getting more cards, as long as im getting the best bang for my buck.

It's derailed a good bit.

Chase Southwest?
I signed up my wife for the Chase personal SW and Biz cards to achieve the companion pass for 2 years. Amazing perk. We've got four long weekend trips planned just because it's so cheap.

You did fine. It's a good card. It's just personal preference and where you want to get points.

In any event, after I went to India this past August and did pretty well price wise using some points I had collected with my USAA card for 10 years, I decided to learn more about the credit card game and here I am....a junky.

This is the internal struggle I have. I made myself put together a 2 year strategy spreadsheet of vacations and points need so I have a plan of when to get cards.
But, I see things like 100k AA points and it's hard to pass that up.

Nice. What's your strategy for that?

My CSP and Freedom got me 50k. Future wife got 60k off those two when freedom was 20k. Just earned 50k with Chase ink plus. Will manufacture a little bit if needed since I need about 320k UR points for first class. Will also probably get two more united cards in branch which would give us another 100k united points. Branch bonus is 50k points.

So 160 UR in bonuses plus 100k united points from bonuses plus 5k a month in UR points from regular spend. Can manufacture up to at least 10k a month if things get close at end of this year.

Probably get a Hyatt or similar for a nice hotel. Have 30k Star points I earned off SPG in December for flexibility. May get her one to get another bonus to make the points useful.

Got a Barclay arrival for the weddings this year. Will probably keep for random expenses in the future for more even more flexibility.

I saw something about this the other day, emailed my military brother about it, and called him a lucky a-hole.

Makes me think is their no limit to this? Think $400 credit card fees with lounge access.

See my edit. Crazy if that is true. I'm going to abuse him, I mean, his privileges.

I pulled the trigger on a CPS. Will transfer the 40,000 points to my Marriott rewards card....then cancel the CPS and go with the AmEx Gold.

They really jacked up that reward.

Might as well for the club passes too.

Yeah that's a good one. I'll likely get that one in the future.

Definitely not the best way to spend ultimate rewards.

Are you reimbursed for the costs, or is the bill paid directly by the company?
