Hey now,
5,000 points per passenger RT. Figured it was a good deal from my research, and a decent enough airline.
I was probably going to use Thai from BKK to HKT. They have some cheapo fares.
AirAsia is a bit more than $50 ($170 per passenger RT) and I'm trying to avoid an airline that had a crash recently. Of course, the way this is going, Bangkok Air will be next.
Not sure it really matters, but they fly out of DMK and not BKK as well.
Forgot to mention. AirAsia can't get me to Phuket in time to catch my boat to Ko Yao Noi.

I kid.
5k RT? That ain't bad at all.
BKK-REP
REP-BKK-HKT?
My wife said the same thing about air Asia. Hah. She wasn't excited about that leg, But truthfully they have a pretty good record, and service on board was good. DMK was real easy too.
I flew an A380 on Thai NRT to BKK. Really enjoyed the service and food.

REP-BKK-HKT?
Unfortunately no. Routing rules are you have to return to country of departure, but you could "throw away" that return. It ends up still being a decent deal if you just use the one-way. Bangkok Air does have a REP to HKT flight but I think that comes out to 8,000 and worth it to throw away the return to REP since one way is $400 each. BKK-REP-BKK-HKT still gets me to HKT at the same time as REP - HKT which is weird.
I don't need HKT to BKK as that's part of my overall award flight. HKT to BKK to PVG on Thai.
Right now my Thai flights are all biz:
ICN to BKK on 777-300
HKT to BKK on 777-300
BKK to PVG on A330. I hear this one kind of sucks but they change their equipment a lot too supposedly
I'm kinda doing Frugal Travel Guy kind of stuff when I try to get as close to 0 out of pocket unless I break a cardinal rule of cents per point.

Using miles to get to French Polynesia sucks.

Air Asia Asean pass
Could be potentially good. The catch:

A few of the big gotchas in there that I see – you still have to pay all the taxes on the flights (which on low-cost carriers can be significant – on a sample flight I looked at from Bangkok to Singapore, the airport taxes were $23 of the $51 total fare).

Yeah. It was not an easy task. When I booked on AA, I had to do it 330 days out and call AA on the day the award space was released to AA from Air Tahiti Nui(TN). Air Tahiti Nui is the only carrier with directs from US to Tahiti and they codeshare with AA and Delta, but Delta requires a silly amount of points. There are a few other routes with layovers in Honolulu(HNL) I was using Expert Flyer to watch for the award space. They typically release only 2 business class seats per flight - LAX-PPT, and randomly/rarely will release more a couple weeks before departure.
Business class was 62.5k miles each way. Round trip it was about $120 in fees, but most of that was booking fees. AA is no longer collecting booking fees for awards that have to be booked over the phone.
The kicker was the $500*2 RT flights from Tahiti to Bora Bora. An extra $1k for 1 hour flights

Did you find a way around paying for the last leg?

Barclay's Arrival Plus covered most of it.
It's operated by Air Tahiti(not nui). They don't have any partners and points can not be used to book them. They have you by the balls when you get down there.
Sho is pretty though.

Bora Bora is ridiculous. I have a photo (pre digital camera days) from the top of that mountain. We took a jeep tour up there. It felt like the jeep was going to stand up on its back end.
We were talking last night and it looks like we might do the Cook Islands instead but awards booking is probably just as bad to get there if not worse.

I looked in to this too and I want to say I found a decent redemption option there. I'll look in to it.

When we went there were only a few resorts to stay there. There were literally no cars on the road so we used the resorts bicycles to get around. You step into the lagoon and you're snorkeling in coral immediately.
It's like combining the beauty of the interior of St. John and the beauty of the water of Turks and Caicos. then you add in the fact of how huge that lagoon is because of the barrier reef and you truly have paradise.

Am I being a spoiled point chaser by turning up my nose on the 60k Ink offer in hopes they repeat their 70k offer from last year?
Posted on 2/13/15 at 10:15 am to Joshjrn
I'm praying Citi does the 100000 mile deal that they did last year on the Executive card. I'm going to churn and dump 6 or more of those bad boys between my wife and I if they do.

Does it normally take 8 weeks for bonus points to be added to your account? Just applied for the CITI AAdavantage Platinum for a flight I am taking at the beginning of the summer and just saw that info after I applied?
Posted on 2/13/15 at 10:30 am to saderade
The language says that but I've had miles post to my account much faster. It's generally after the statement that closes after you meet your spend from my experience.

Looks like my apporama is on hold. A house we have had our eye on just went up for sale, I'll have to wait and see how this plays out. Damnit.

Yes.

At most you will probably have to wait 48 hours after that statement posts. I've never seen it go longer than that myself.

Me and the wife will be going to Bora Bora at some point in the next two years (hopefully). Any advice? Does everything fly out of LAX? I assume I'll use my Hilton cards/points for the stay and "up in the air" on the flights

Get the Chase IHG card 18-24 months before you're planning to go. The Intercontinental Thalasso is 50k points/night. I believe there is a 70k point offer out there right now. You can buy 10k IHG points for $35. Between you and your wife you will now have 140k points. So, for $210(10k points @ $35 x 6) you can get 4 nights between you and your wife at the Intercontiental Thalasso. All rooms are overwater bungalows and they are all the same. Only difference is location.
Upon anniversary date you'll both receive a free night good at any IHG property with a $49 annual fee. You now have 6 nights for $308 at a hotel where rooms generally run over $1,000/night.
Or, you could burn your Hilton points and I have no advice for you

The key here is booking as far out as possible. Get your flights booked at 330 days out. Check the hotel website the days you're ready to book flight and check for availability. When air is booked, book rooms. You'll have to add the annual free night when it comes available and hopefully still is. If not, you can always use at the IC Moorea or IC Le Moana on the island side in Bora Bora.
The AA business award seats go very fast as well do the hotel rooms. They only offer 4 rooms per day for award reservations unless not filling up.
