I'll assume you are talking about becoming an I&E tech?
It is a good job but you do need a background in it or schooling. Find a local trade school that offers it and go for free. You also might want to look into the Process Technology programs taught at seven schools in LA(BRCC, Nunez CC, River Parishes CC, etc.).

Do you have a technical background?
As Cash said, it's a good job to have if your technically inclined. It's a niche field with all due respect. Very good I&E Techs can make very good money, however, getting there takes time. You can go to some sort of technical school to get your feet wet in the trade however there is really no training like good ole on the job experience. Also, how do you feel about work shift work at a plant? B/C the majority of that field consists of working long days or shift work on a maintenance crew at a plant of some sort or you would be traveling around as a contractor doing new construction.
Good Luck

It is a great field imo. I have been in it for almost 5 yrs now and I love it. Having said that, I did attend a trade school in Lake Charles. It helps to get a handle on the basics if you know what I mean. The money is good and the work is not labor intensive. As for the job market, cant really say with the state we're in.

Don't know what the short term looks like, but in the next 5-10 years there will be lots of guys retiring. Therefore lots of opportunities for new guys. They will need to be trained and up to speed before the old guys drag up.

i dont have a technical background. thats why i am planning on attending iti or LA Technical College. Do any of you know if anyone is hiring (so i could get my feet wet)?

You can go out and get the technical training... and try to get a job as an entry level tech and work your way up. If you live in the BR area, you shouldn't have trouble seeking employment in that field.

I don't know of anyone that is hiring, but that doesn't mean anything. I'm not involved in instrumentation anymore.
I'd go talk to a few schools. They might have internship opportunities at some of the local plants for students.
