honestly it sounds like a great opportunity

This appears to be one of those "once in a lifetime" opportunities.

good luck with the decision

Thanks. The big boss is coming to NOLA next week to meet my wife and all that in person. Between now and then, the money and moving packages and all that will be discussed in detail.

We made the decision last night that as long as the final written offer is as good as what they are telling us now, we will do it.

We won't be required to move until July from what we understand now, so I'll have time to find employment before we move.

What is your wife's background? How did she get on a firm's radar in CA from BR?

This is a pretty fascinating situation.

Her boss has the connection, he's the new upper level manager, recruited her.

Connections, mainly.

You should be able to make that price range work. If you want a nice family area with good schools, look into Rockridge (Oakland), Bushrod (Oakland), or North Berkeley.

ETA: If the household income will increase by ~40%, you'll take a cost of living hit. Many CPI calculators put an increase of around 60% is needed to maintain a fully equal living experience between the two cities.
