This is something that will get you cut instantly if you are lacking.

College grad goes to NY to interview for GS IB. Staff place him in his interview room and leave. GS cranks up the temperature so that it is really warm and comfortable (I think they have him sitting on a couch). He is left for 45 minutes...and falls asleep.

When the GS VP walks in to interview him, the kid is sleeping and the VP flips out and says that he is finished and can leave. The kid responds (paraphrasing), "frick no, I have waited an hour for you to come in here and interview--so thats exactly what you are going to do".

Interview begins and during it, the VP says "Sell me something" so the kid asks for the VPs pencil that is in his pocket. VP gives it to the recruit, who proceeds to break the VP's pencil in half and throw it on the ground. He then says, "Now you don't have a pencil and I control the supply. Pay me 10x what it would have cost you previously."

I have no reason to believe it to be false. The guy is a classmate of someone I work with. GS is known for having a cut-throat environment, so it didn't sound too outrageous.

Much more exotic stories exist in IB books. It is actually quite believable -- that industry is just operates differently than the rest of the world.

After reading Monkey Business, I don't doubt any stories from the industry.

I'm taking your word for it, but I will admit that the first time I read it I thought it was made up.

I didn't believe it at first either While it might discredit the story from an LSU perspective, the kid went to Texas A&M...

What's the recommended dress code for this?

Probably business casual. I think I wore a blazer just to be safe.

Just discredits it in a general perspective, those dudes are in constant one-up mode as they get harassed by UT people on the reg.

I have read differing opinions. I am most likely going to rock a coat and tie...just to be safe

As someone who works for E&Y I think I can advise on the matter. Wear slacks and a dress shirt. Bonus points for wearing a blazer. Don't rock the tie. You'll come off as a suck up. At most wear a suit with no tie.

It's the max I'd suggest going. If you have a sports coat or navy blazer that's what I would suggest more. Truth is if you showed up in full interview attire it's not like that is going to lose you the job, but it can make you look like you are trying too hard.

I agree with this. It's meant to be a more casual atmosphere and involves very little work talk. A few, "why accounting", "why E&Y", or "why did you choose LSU" types of questions. Confidence and social skills stand out at these types of functions. Which is why I pre-gamed with a couple of cocktails before-hand I viewed it as me getting a feel for their company, without arrogance, as much as they viewed it as an interview of me.

The invitation says business casual. I will probably wear suit pants and a really nice button down.

I don't think I can go wrong. Anyone have any idea how many people will be there?
