I’m an excel spreadsheet kind of guy, but have been looking for an app for my iPhone to help give me quick snapshots of things when I’m not near my computer. What are some of the better free budgeting apps you have seen for your phones out there that you’d recommend.

Mint.com is free.

I use YNAB but there is a annual fee.

Just downloaded mint and playing around with it now. What’s the difference between it and YNAB in your opinion.

Mint is great at categorizing your transactions, but for budgeting in the future it falls short.

YNAB lets you give each dollar in your account a "job" for the future. It's much better for planning ahead and easily covering over-budget categories with money from others. You can get around a 50 day free trial if I'm not mistaken. I would recommend trying both.

Really more day to day spending tracking to plug back into my budget. I’ve got my budget lined out in detail for the year and am trying to get the better half on board about being cognizant of what we spend in certain categories.

personal capital will also link all your financial accounts (credit cards, loans, checkings, savings, HSA, 401k, IRA, paypal, venmo, etc.). It is overall geared to keeping an eye on net worth but it also tracks all of your individual transactions for spending. It has default and customizable spending, income and transfer categories. It allows full historical tracking and trending. It allows you to compare any two time periods.

It also allows you to export any set of data that you want to a few different file types. I think quicken, CSV and something else are the default file types.

The only thing it really can't do is let you set a budgeted amount per category and alert you. You can set an overall monthly spending budget level to monitor against.

My budget is on a spreadsheet as well and had the same problem as you. What I ended up doing was converting my excel sheet to a google sheet and then put it on my google drive. That way, whenever I need it I just go to the google drive app. I can also make changes to it on the fly and it’ll save so I have access to the changes when I get to my computer.

There was a thread earlier this month about Tiller. I’m going to look into it and see if I can get more information from Tiller than my spreadsheet.

Tiller
