Anybody have experience with LT38 notice from the IRS

I received this notice saying I owe $5K from the 2020 tax year. The reason stated is that they relaxed the notifications during the pandemic. However, I have filed and paid as directed for the last 15 years with the same CPA.
Has anybody had to deal with this? How should I go about fighting it? I will be in contact with my CPA, just wanted to see if this was something happening on a wider scale.

Are you saying you paid your taxes and this is the first notice that you owed back taxes?

Yes, I can prove I paid around 15k as my 1040 said I should. These supposed back taxes are news to me.

Contrary to believe people working at the IRS are generally helpful but slow. Sounds like you would be able to call and get the documentation to them to close this out

quote:this and I’ve had to work with IRS over the phone many many times (not for me but for others). First, establish or log into your irs account. Then you will see all notices etc. then figure out where they went wrong. Document and word it so a five year old could understand it. Then reach out and ask them to help. Yes, “ask” them. It will work better for you with that language. If and only if you don’t get results, contact the Tax Payers Advocate. You may have had some income show up on their end that doesn’t jive with yours.

ETA: Is your CPA doing it no fee?

You should have received a notice likely in 2021 or early 2022 stating what the initial issue was. That’s what needs to be resolved. Are they missing a payment? Saying you underreported your income? Some kind of penalty?
