The grocery business is undergoing a lot of changes. Anyone care to predict the future for SEG?
Bloomberg article:
Winn-Dixie parent company considering bankruptcy
Jacksonville Business Journal:
Southeastern Grocers will not be around in 5 years
Bloomberg article:

By some accounts, Bi-Lo is close to default, putting in jeopardy about $1 billion of debt and 50,000 jobs at Winn-Dixie, Harveys, Fresco y Mas and its namesake stores. But Lone Star has already come out ahead, even after committing more capital. The firm has paid itself at least $800 million since 2012, regulatory filings show, and collected still more in management fees.

Southeastern Grocers' bill is coming due, and the Jacksonville-based company’s struggle to refinance $1 billion in debt could result in a Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring, according to industry analysts. Southeastern Grocers, parent company of Bi-Lo, Harveys, Winn-Dixie and Fresco Y Mas, has reportedly hired Evercore, an investment bank, to advise it as the grocer restructures its debt

The 50,000 jobs number is clickbait if they are going to target Chapter is 11.
Winn Dixie has been a laggard in the grocery industry for awhile. It’s product mix hasn’t reflected changing trends with too much center store dependence.

Margins are very thin in this business. If you don't have cash in the bank to do some serious "forward buying" and/or diverting, you're screwed. Buying, in general, is where you make your money (any fool can sell). That's why Wal Mart is so competitive - they beat up their vendors until they bleed.
That said, manufacturers are infamous for hoarding the lions share of the profit pie in the grocery world. People like P&G, General Mills, etc, are socking it away and letting distributors wither on the vine, knowing full-well that a new player will show up to fill the vacuum.
My first-hand experience with WD: they run a loose ship at retail level. Their employees seem to have good intentions, but I sense a lack of leadership at store level. Not sure how their DM's perform; how often or how much time they spend with store managers. Any way you cut it, it's a tough, unglamorous business.
Landlords don't exactly help the profit picture either.

Bi-Lo around here is like a fourth tier store, behind Publix/Harris Teeter/Food Lion. I’m guessing the new German grocers around here (Aldi and Lidl) are stealing their market share.

Economics 101. You have to compete on price or experience/differentiation. People who play in the middle eventually get crushed by both sides... retail history is full of those stories.
The only time Winn Dixie in NOLA is competitive on price is sometimes, on their sale items that you have to use their card for. Their non-sale prices are astronomical. Nor are their stores in an way customer-service oriented. Lines are long, items are out of stock, stores are dirty, and employees generally don't give a crap.
They might have gotten away with that 20-30 years ago. But in today's ultra-competitive environment, that won't work.

I agree Winn Dixie is a tired old school chain....do a stock history and you will see how high it was at one time
Their employees took a major hit when it went down too pennies...several years back
