quote:Well, maybe you were 3rd in the conference... meaning you didn't have to play an extra game (conference championship) at the end of the regular season.
Why would any team prefer playing a game (home or away) over a bye week to rest and auto-advance?
So you get the same amount of time off, you just start it a week earlier. You're sitting at home resting while Alabama and Georgia beat the snot out of each other, and one of them is going to miss a week's time off.
The bye becomes more relevant once you get rid of the conference championships.

Having the bye means that you finished in the top 4. You would absolutely be at home for the first game in that situation.

Only the first round games are on campus. The rest are neutral sites (bowls).
As an LSU FAN, I'm absolutely love to host a playoff game at night in Tiger Stadium. Best case scenario, next round is Sugar (Nola)... that would be 2 games which I could make on little notice, only the cost of tickets. And you'd be "home team" in the Sugar for practical purposes, even though you're the lower seed. The secondary ticket market would make that the case.
Worst case scenario would be road first round... but at least we play. 2nd worst case, just my own opinion, would be a bye- but going to basically a road matchup. Say, Rose, against USC; Atlanta but facing UGA; or catching Texas at one of the Texas sites. You're coming in cold off an off-date, while they are riding the emotions from a big win, and now will have the crowd at the neutral site.

This is the correct answer.
I’m amazed at the number of posters wanting to play an extra game
