Would LSU be.... (Posted on 8/29/09 at 8:39 p.m.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The same team that the Tigers are if Saban had never stepped foot in Baton Rouge.

Would this guy be the same as if he never bought a Power ball ticket

Keep in mind that LSU made Saban as much as Saban made LSU

the move to LSU definately made nick saban. he actually inherited a pretty talented team as Dinardo is the one that inherited curly hallman's disaster. saban was a pretty good coach at michigan state but there was a lot of doubters when he was hired because his record wasn't that great and we had just crushed his team in the independence bowl. he had a 5 year career here. take away the nc year and it was only OK. by far, his 3 best contributions to LSU football are....
1)the '03 nc
2)the athlete academic center
3)he woke LSU up on coaches pay. LSU used to hire cheap and i think they realized that was a mistake.

LSU and Saban were perfect for each other at that time. Both have benefited greatly. Unless Saban has improved a lot on his weaknesses, he still doesn't walk on water, but is a very good coach. If he does at Bama like he did at LSU, he'll avg. 3 losses a year. He may or may not get the breaks one needs to win the NC.

Pre Saban hire: 1 MNC in like 80 years
Post Saban hire: 2 MNC in less than a decade

Pretty self explanatory

You sure you're a "bamalover" and not a fan of certain VERY envious in state school to the west? Your tone sounds all too familiar!

I don't think it's as simple as that. You've presupposed that no one could have done better than Saban at LSU or that LSU could not have done better without Saban.

To really address the question we need to know who else was available after the '99 season.

The truth hurts doesn't it...

LSU will soon return to pre-Saban levels...the wheels started to fall off last year, and will continue this year.

yes, the right hire would have been found, id not Saban, at that point LSU was willing to pay the big bucks to get back on the map.

If it was so easy, why did it take over 40 years and a slew of coaches to repeat the success? Obviously he put you guys on the map...and not the other way around.

You had not been on the map since the 1950's...and that was a 1 hit wonder. What makes you think it all of a sudden would have happened in 2000? Not only were you not a national power, you weren't even a conference power as you only won 4 Conference championships the previous 40 YEARS before Saban arrived.

I guess he was good enough to be Defensive Coordinator for arguably the best coach in ALL of football...Bill Belichick anyone? He was widely regarded as an up and coming coach.

Who said it was easy...we just said that the situation was prime for a turnaround right then and there. The prior coach had done a decent job of stocking the team, he just couldn't use it. Don't delude yourself that Saban singlehandedly took horrific players and turned the team around with sheer genius.

Although I don't know why I bother...you are obviously a troll/hack just kneejerk defending Saban.

LSU would not be the "same" team if Saban had never coached at LSU. Whether LSU would be "better" or "worse" depends largely on who LSU would have hired if they had not hired Saban.

Saban has his flaws. His offense played things so close to the vest that one mistake often could have decided the game versus the majority of our rivals. However, he emphasized discipline so heavily that game changing mistakes were unlikely to happen in most situations. That philosophy is fine in the NFL. Dealing with 18-22 year old kids is a different story though.

Do I think he's a great coach? Yes.
Do I think he's a top five college football coach? No.

Carroll, Stoops, Meyer, Butch Davis, and Jim Tressel are all better IMO.

Mack Brown, Saban, Miles, Steve Spurrier, and Jeff Tedford are all in a group behind my top five.

You say this like it is a zero sum game and LSU existed in a vacuum. THey just needed to be X good and they get Y.

You had been primed for a "turnaround" since 1960.
