He is not an awful commentator. It's his blantant homerism and bias that is his fault.
Oh, and on a similar subject, when did it become okay in sports to blantantly show your homerism. Seems like this has become very commonplace.

Saw him on Fox, he was pretty good but his football commentary is lame. He laughs when he picks ND for anything, he does it as a joke.
