Not really. From base to base, it's a 127' throw. At normal depth, third is slightly longer. However, the SS can have the longer throws more often when he makes a play deep to his right. Without being able to get his momentum moving toward first, he has to have a lot of arm strength for that throw. The 3Bman will have the longest throw on the infield if he's playing back and makes a play to his right down the line. But those throws don't happen often.

All that being said, both positions require a strong arm to make plays to their right side.

All I know is, Thompson looked more comfortable making the throw from short than he did from third. And damn does that left side look good with Doughty at third and Thompson at short.

I aint mad at it either. It's interesting because this option was available from day 1. I wonder why it took Bianco's implosion, who should never have been there to start, to get us to this point.

Bianco doesn't have the arm to throw someone out at shortstop much less 3b.

Have you played ball? A SS makes farther throws than a 3B most of the time!!

I'm fully convinced that some promises were made to Bianco to get him to come back. That is the only way I could make sense of all this.

Wasn't he in the transfer portal? I completely forgot about that until just now.

He was one of the first to enter IIRC, but he pulled his name out and said he was returning.

The Advocate on May 18, 2020. I'm not linking that crap site.
quote:

Sophomore outfielder Drew Bianco removed himself from the NCAA transfer portal and will return to LSU; meanwhile, sophomore utility player CJ Willis entered the nationwide database.

Bianco reluctantly put his name in the transfer portal last month, allowing other college coaches to contact him about a potential transfer, but coach Paul Mainieri said Bianco wanted to return to LSU.

Bianco, who started eight games during the shortened 2020 season, has a career .147 batting average. Mainieri said last month Bianco will have a chance to regain his starting role.

Hmmm

I know this phrase gets thrown out a lot but I think Thompson is just a gamer and probably isn’t very flashy at practice. Remember he even started Helmers over Thompson at 3rd to begin the season.

The reason he gave for Thompson being behind the others at short leading up to opening weekend was because his throws were all over the place in practice. Like you said, maybe seeing that it hasn’t been an issue from 3B in games gave him enough confidence to try him back at SS.

I would like to see the guy play too but is it really that hard to believe that Crews, Dugas, a healthy Gio, and Drost are just better than him right now? There just isn’t a spot to put him on the field like last year when you had a spot in left field that was available for the taking by anyone. He started multiple guys out there including one that is playing first base for ULL.

Didn't CJ start 3B vs LSU? He had an error, too, IIRC.

Debatable. Morgan bailed him out a couple times.

I like him at shortstop. I think he will make some throwing errors there but I have confidence that he has the range to play the position. He’s only a freshman and can easily grow into that position and be a really good one. Bregman’s defense as a freshman was ok but nothing special. He ended up being pretty good there by the time he left.

You are right the other LSU transfer outfielder played first but I think Willis has played both this year for ULL.

I thought Breaux was on first and Toups was in LF?

Willis started some games for LSU at 1B and was playing third against us.

Toups im almost certain was in LF against us. I don’t remember if he ever started a game last year or not but he definitely got playing time.

Breaux was an OF for us. Started opening weekend in CF the second game. I thought he was going to be a good one.
