All I ask is that those who didn't graduate from the school I worked my fricking arse of at treat my school (and it's alumni) with the respect that they've earned.
Acting like a baffoon, racist, thug, cheesedick disrespects me by belittling my education in the eyes of the rest of the civilized world. For that, I have every right to be pissed at these idiots.
I'm all for non-LSU alumni loving LSU and being huge fans. Just realize that when you do it, you represent the university and vicariously the education that was worked very hard for by it's alumni.
Exactly. This is not telling anyone to "not be a fan" or as the one dude said, "not wave his purple and gold confederate flag"...wow

Of course you are. I NEVER would have guessed that someone in South LA who wasn't college educated and was bragging about their salary was a grunt worker in the oil industry.

Good for you. I sleep at home with my family every night, work half as many hours, have 10 times the benefits....WITH ALL THE HOURS I PUT IN TO SCHOOL!
You know....while we're being classless

Luke, my dad told me this when I was very young. He said...
"Son, there are assholes all over the place. Learn to deal with them and don't become one."
It is true. The Redneck Nation isn't limited to the South. It is all over. Chicago, New York, D.C., Europe....it is there. An excellent read on this subject.. Michael Grahams' Redneck Nation

Is anyone questioning fandom? Someone said something about an education and then we have 20 people saying their fandom has been questioned and thats so wrong...and you accuse someone of being a ranter?

quote:I have to partially disagree with this sentiment. Yes, there is a feel and an experience for LSU (and presumably most other colleges) that can only be experienced as a fan who is also a student. That is a special time in a fan's life that (hopefully) will be some of the most cherished memories he/she will carry throughout their lifetime.
I just don't think that non-students can gain that level of appreciation that students are able to attain if they so wish.
However, being or having been a student at LSU is in no way proof or predicate of being a true fan. Being a true fan of LSU is about much more than simply attending classes and living in Baton Rouge. There is a feel, an attitude about life and sports and how to enjoy them that is uniquely LSU. I know, because I was a fan for nearly two decades before I ever set foot in an LSU class. And I know many others, from the rednecks in pickup trucks blasting Garth Brooks, to the pig-roasting Cajuns passing around the moonshine, to the Capitol Hill executive singing Karaoke with a certain female Louisiana Senator; all sharing two things: a love of LSU and a lack of an LSU diploma.
Both my parents graduated from LSU, as did I and both my brothers. Those diplomas are not what made us LSU fans. It was the nights sitting under the lights screaming bloody murder for the Tigers. It was riding sky high when the oranges rained down in Tiger Stadium, and hitting an all-time low a week later as our elation was doused by a freak Green Wave. It was days running from the Tiger Cage to the Parade Ground and stopping at all the tailgates along the way to share the best and most unique food anywhere, and the goodwill to match. It was the shock and joy of the Giantkillers knocking off Kentucky, and Rudy Macklin and Howard Carter leading us to the Final Four. It was John Williams and Ricky Blanton leading us back 5 years later with a magical win over the Wildcats and Kenny "Sky" Walker. It was countless hours reliving the exploits of Alexander the Great, Pistol Pete, Dalton Hilliard, Hokie Gajan, Ramsey Dardar, David Woodley, Steve Rehage, Ethan Martin, Ben MacDonald, Skip Bertman, Dale Brown, and countless other heroes of the gridiron, hardwood and diamond. It was the awe at the legend of Cholly Mac and the reluctant frustration at the reality of Coach McClendon. It was the good times and the bad times, but most of all it was the sharing of it all with other people who would be perfect strangers if not for that spirit that each of us recognized in each other. That spirit and love for LSU is what made us all LSU fans. And it isn't learned in a classroom or earned with a diploma. It's either in your blood or it's not.
So I don't care if you've got three LSU degrees and have been at every home game for 50 years, or if you are a high school dropout who just heard of LSU last January 7th. If you love LSU and love life and love to celebrate both of them the way we do, then I welcome you as a true purple & gold LSU fan.

SO....what I gather from this entire conversation...
1)Rouge thinks it's all ponies and butterflies when it comes to paying for college...I have 2 scholarships and 2 loans...and guess what...for living expenses...ITS STILL NOT ENOUGH!!!...and they won't give me anymore
2)Luke seems a little stuck-up...especially with I make more money and work less hours plug...that was completely classless
3)My parents are lesser fans because they didn't graduate from ASU. Yes, I agree that being a student at the school makes it a little different and maybe it's a different experience, but my parents have done pretty much everything I have as far as football goes. They didn't get to go to UM or LSU because of travel expenses (mine were paid for by the band), but if I weren't in band and was just a regular student, I probably wouldn't have gone either because of $$.
And as far as people that graduated acting better than people that didn't...have you ever been in a student section and then gone to where the season ticket holders(some of which are not graduates)...here...it can be a huge difference in behavior

people who actually attended the university are definately more invested into the school/team than joe redneck who likes lsu because they're winning, sorry
You, my friend, are very arrogant. Some of our parents wouldn't let us go due to money issues. My uncle played football at LSU under Charlie Mac; my dad ran track at LSU; my 83 yo grandmother can name every player on the team, where there from, where they are on the depth chart, what they bench, etc; and I have been going to games since I can remember. But because I didn't get to go to LSU makes me joe redneck bandwagon fan ? I bet you I could put you under the table with LSU trivia.
