Some of y'all have a very liberal definition of "elite". I would not consider Florida "elite" by any stretch, they have 2 NCs, and only 4 Final Fours... By comparison Kentucky (who is considered elite by virtually everyone) has 7 Championships and 14 Final Fours
And you have a very liberal use of the word "liberal".
So what youre saying is that Florida didnt become elite by winning back to back NCs and consistantly being a top 10 ranked team? So other than UK, UNC, Duke, Kansas, Uconn and others with long traditions...no one can possibly become elite? I mean...if LSU wins back to back championships and has talent lining up to come to Baton Rouge...that is not attaining an Elite status?

I think recruiting Texas for big men 6'9 and taller would help out, they have tones are guys that fit this bill and I think we could get a few from there. Guards can be found a dime a dozen from anywhere, jump on the elite players in the state at a early age. A lot of people seem to think just because a kid lives in that state or city of a D1 school that they have to come there, but that doesn't mean the kid likes that school or ever paid much attention to them, you also have to account for the negative things they may hear about the program from up close.

We finished 11-20 in both 2009 and 2010 with a total of 5 SEC wins combined.
We just beat Bama to go 14-10, 4-6 with 6 games to go.
Why talk bout elite???
How many times has LSU basketball ever reached the elite 8?
I will be content, right now, with being in the Top 80 or so and making post season play.

but I could easily see us as a perennial top 15 team under Trent.
I'll take it!!

Lonnie is a reasonable man. A win in a home game in the NIT would be great for the fans who follow the team, and for Trent.

True dat. By my count, recollection we've been to the elite 8 six times, and of course the final four four times. Of course never winning one game in any of the final fours (including losses in two consolation games) certainly precludes any argument that LSU was ever elite in hoops, but there are, what....6 current SEC teams that have never made a final four and some like Bama, Ole Miss and maybe one or two others who've never made an elite 8 even. Two years back was Tennesse's first ever elite 8.
Expecting us to go from where we were to the NCAA tournament in one year is not very realistic so in that sense I'm happy to get to the NIT. Heck, before the season started I though it our cieling.
But expecting not to let the program slip as far down as it did is realistic as well. Trent is complicit in that.

LSU is a long ways away from being an "elite" program. Some major changes would have to happen including the identity of the fan base. I don't know why, but people here support baseball more than basketball. Personally, I like basketball a whole lot more, but to each his own. We just need to be a good program on a consistent basis and I'll be happy. Just get us to the tournament consistently and win a couple of games.

Baseball became the best in the country and Skip was also a master at PR and marketing.
I think also LSU fans want a reason to party and baseball games are very conducive to that. Weather after Febuary is usually beautiful, folks can tailgate and hell, when I was a season ticket-holder for baseball they let you bring daquaris in and walk in and out of the stadium at your liesure.
I know so many folks who have tickets to baseball that haven't watched a full game in the stadium ever. They go to cook and eat, drink and visit.
Before Skip came as you know baseball was here like it still is at the vast majority of schools, a minor sport with very sparse attendance.

The real question is will LSU basketball ever win the big dance?
I can see it happening at some point.

If Florida can than we can too.
Now as to whether Trent can? I have my doubts. I'd love for him to as I like the man, but I have too many issues with his bench coaching, system and some other things to think he can.

Good point. I know the weather is pretty terrible during basketball season, but it still surprises me that no one tailgates much for it. In Louisiana, any excuse is good enough to set up a grill and drink some beers.

I could park across the street at game time, walk up to the ticket window, and get me a dang good seat just bout anywhere I wanted between the dug outs.
Of course, the product was a little lacking.
Skip's run was bout as amazing a run of as I have ever seen...dem were the times.

Just want to know what yall think. Personnaly I say no.
Trent can't seem to get really good high profile players. I don't know why. I thought he would elevated the program, but now I have resevation. If this recuriting class doesn't have two big time players who step in a contribute immedialy I think this will be his last year. Big problem is who will take the job with onlly 1 or 2 LA players who are any good.

What makes you think this class needs two players to contribute immediately?
We return:
Turner
Stringer
Hickey
O'Bryant
Hamilton
Issac
Courtney
out of the starting 5 (which all returns next year btw) we need to replace one of them at the moment (Stringer).

I'm really as excited about Morgan as I've been about any recruit Trent's gotten. I know O'Bryant was ranked alot higher and I was glad we got him, but from all accounts, both cyber and from HS and college coaches I've talked to recently, the kid will be able to play at this level and pretty early on.
Still IMHO we need a banger to back up our bigs and I think we need a point to back up Hickey.

Plus we have Morgan already committed in early signing.

We'd be elite now if we could only play teams that don't play their top 4 scorers.
I kid I kid
TJ or for that matter any coach LSU can legitmately hire can/will be "elite" if they can recruit "elite" talent.
It's all about the horses, right now we don't have enough to be an NCAA tourney team, prolly not enough to be an NIT team and maybe not enough to be a mid level (.500) SEC team.
