Why was the offsides play against UF called dead?

If you recall a Florida player was late getting on the field and was offsides when we snapped the ball. If that flag is thrown and the play plays out I think Emery might have taken it for a TD or at the very least a big gain.

It's not like the guy had a free run at the QB

Looked like Emery broke a tackle and was about to be off to the races then the play was called dead

That should have been a "free play" for us

Yeah that's literally what offsides is

But they don't call it dead every time

He didn't have a free run on the QB or anything so it made no sense to call the play dead

They will call it dead in college if they think it could create a dangerous play. Happens all the time.

The ref said that but on the replay it looked like he got across and set up just as we snapped (unless there was a 2nd player offsides)

Funny part was the very next play they almost had a repeat.

I get that. I just didn't see the potential in this instance and it may have cost us a TD.

Moot point now since we won but seemed like an unnecessary stoppage of play.

There was a second guy that was just barely on the screen and way in our backfield. Refs don’t know that we are busting a play and immediately blow whistle. Just didn’t hear it for a bit. It let’s say we pass. That guy had a direct target at qb.

Couple of weird non calls on that drive that didn't go our way.

Another was the hit that injured Emery. I thought it was pretty late and unnecessarily rough/out of bounds where he basically slung JE into the UF bench.

also the first quarter they were giving first downs to plays that looked a yard short. They did it 2 or 3 times for us and 1 or 2 times for them. It seemed kind of weird.

If a player never gets to his side of the field it is a dead ball foul.

It is similar to offside, but it is a stricter penalty.
