because when i get my diploma, its gonna say the university of louisiana- monroe. and if i apply for a job in lets say california, my possible employer may look at my degree and say its not as good as one from university of louisiana because the sterotype is that if it has the city name like that, then its a sub-school of a better university.

I know that. My point is actually that the name has everything to do with student recruiting and the politics of funding. And the fact that some schools stand apart.

And, you mention something about Flagships in Louisiana. LSU is THE flagship. That is why they are protecting the ULL folks from declaring otherwise. There is no other FLAGSHIP in this state. And to the FLAGSHIP goes the $$$$$$$.

You insecure idiots are clouding the point by arguing semantics. I guess I shouldn't expect much out of people who cry when ULL calls themselves "Louisiana."

When you live in Lafayette for 10 years and put up with some of their blind hatred, you tend to form opinions on such matters. I work for a company out of Lafayette, and several of the ULL grads give me hell every time LSU loses in anything. A couple of them came to BR for the LSU/OM game wearing Ole Miss stuff even though they have no ties to the Rebels. In fact, they have thrown parties before just to cheer against LSU. If you want to talk about pathetic, it doesn't get much worse than that.

That's a poor argument. I'd be willing to bet that diploma's from Texas actually say "University of Texas at Austin," since that's the official name of the school.

Like UC-Berkley.

The school makes a name by what it accomplishes.

Again...I said that UL should be USL...University of South Louisiana...

So their fans are annoying? I know that. I've seen them in action. I've also seen annoying LSU fans, Florida fans, USC fans, etc....

I'm sure living closer to them drive you crazy. I understand that. I just think whining about this issue makes LSU fans look bad. LSU is and always will be the big daddy in the state.

they are ULL. and I attend ULM. If they get away with being UL than that makes it look like ULM is a sub-school of ULL which it is not. they will not and should not be known as Louisiana or UL.

the perception of ULM nationally isn't going to change if ULL were to change their name.

What do you think LSU will put up on the scoreboard? UL or ULL? Would it be fair for them to put up UL on the scoreboard when UL-Lafayette comes to town, and ULM on the scoreboard when UL-Monroe comes to town? Or should they simply put up UL when either school comes to Baton Rouge?

but if you let them change theirs to "university of lousisana" than people will automatically assume that its a sub-school. Also, almost everyone knows that the univeristy of texas at austin is better known as TEXAS. it all boils down to a image thing. and its also a known fact that with out a couple of people at the time, no one in monroe or anywhere else wanted to change the name from northeast louisiana university. we like it. but a idiotic lawyer named lawson swearinger didnt like it so he changed the name. if we could change it back, we would in a heart beat. we didnt know they were changeing the name till about a week before it happened.

Who gives a shite? All these naming things are just as pathetic as the whole "The Ohio State University" shite that LSU fans made fun of during the BCSNCG last year.

But you're forgetting that ULL calling themselves "Louisiana" would only be in their marketing. They will still officially be "University of Louisiana at Lafayette" and that will be printed on the diplomas).

Just like LSU purposfully markets themselves as "LSU" and not "Louisiana State" or even "Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College" (even though that's what will be on your diploma.

Schools create and market their image, and it's very important to them. I still don't understand why LSU fans care if ULL calls themselves "Louisiana."

The Arkansas diploma likely says "University of Arkansas at Fayetteville."
