Why Steele is a Good Hire

I think it's time the fan base is honest with itself. We are coming off a 8-5 season and the program is on a slight downturn. The bottom-line is the DC position is not as attractive at this point as it once was. The best way to get us back in the perennial 10-win season standard when the premier DCs are not willing to come is to hire a guy that has a track record of bringing great talent in. The guy has great organizational skills, is a great recruiter and has worked under one of the better defense minds in the game. I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt to see him coordinate a defense that will have elite talent with the recruiting staff we have assembled.

At LSU? C'mon....
You have a head coach that will most likely retire within 5-6 years, a high paying, high profile position and the possibility of moving into the HC position. It's an extremely attractive position.

Yup Schmelly,
Thats exactly why we had all the stud DCs lining up to take the job, right? Its also why our current DC left because of everything you just listed. Moron.

This is absolutely ridiculous. You're simply settling for less and trying to convince yourself. Alleva effed up this DC hire. FACT.

I support the hire and think he will be fine. Bringing back 2 starting DT's and with Godchaux's potential of what has already been seen. Experienced LB's (I'll miss Kwon but Debo should fill nice) and some youth there as well. And we all know the DB's will be ready.
It's not like he is walking into a rebuilding job, there is NFL talent at all 3 levels right now. Will be very excited to see what Steel and O can get done on the recruiting trail this year and especially next year.

You are correct, sir! LSU fans seem to think this is THE best school to coach at during this period in time and only the BEST should be here. Nah. P&G goggles tend to skew reality. It's OUR team and we are die hards but not everyone outside Louisiana sees it that way. They may see this place as more of a problem rather than an opportunity to restore LSU to elite levels. I think all the pieces for a great run are in place now. Let's hope the QB position gets figured out. Geaux Tigers!

There is a reason we didn't hire a premier DC. You can explain it away as a screw up on Alleva's part all you want but I think its a farce. There is obvious dissent. Our DC left for a reason. 8-5 programs that struggle on Offense to move the ball are not attractive to potential DCs.

Silly lsu fans expecting the best for a top 10 football program in the country. People like you are why we settle for mediocrity.

From most accounts we did have people lined up calling. However we choose Steele. Probably nobody wanted to sign a contract attached to Les. Which is why our DC left as well.

I agree, and I think it could bring us a new look on defense. Everyone keeps bringing up the game against WVU when he was last a coordinator, so I've delved into the game to see what may have caused that many points scored
4 Clemson Turnovers (2 of which inside their own 25yd line and 1 99yd fumble recovery) led to a grand total of 28 points directly off of turnovers
That leaves an explanation of 42 points allowed.
*7 came from a busted 70 yd run from WVU's running back
*7 from a short field after a short punt (53 yds)
*7 from a short field and a 15 yd facemask penalty on 3rd down
*7 after a three and out and a 5 play Clemson series (defense may have been tired)
That leaves 14 points allowed via sustained West Virginia drives, mind you a very very good WVU offensive attack that year.
Just food for thought. No DC is ever happy with allowing 70 pts, but it may help to see the context of those scores before we jump off the ledge.

OUR DC LEFT BECAUSE HE GOT PISSED AT THE MILES CLAUSE. THIS SAME CLAUSE HURT US IN GETTING A REALLY GOOD DC.

Nobody said we are settling for mediocrity. We are saying at this point in the program we are at a crossroads. Expecting a grand slam hire was not realistic. Sorry.

You are a complete buffoon.

So those turnovers attributed to his team fielding a 70th ranked defense as well. Wasn't just one game.
Posted on 1/14/15 at 12:40 pm to LeagueCityTiger
We could have easily had the best in the business. The Miles clause prevented that. What's hard to understand?
Posted on 1/14/15 at 12:40 pm to LeagueCityTiger
You are simply trying to rationalize why we didn't get a good DC so that you can feel better about it. You're deluding yourself and frankly it's frightening to see.
