Because he negotiated a bad contract against himself. He failed to do his required due diligence before entering contract negotiations.
BK wanted out of South Bend because the ND boosters were getting tired of him, and he thought ND was preventing him from obtaining players that could win a National Championship.
BK would have likely taken a 5 year deal with incentives for additional years if it was a take it or leave it negotiation. Woodward would have known this if he did not make the hiring a big secret.
