Why is Ohio State QB Haskins at 79% completion? Simple... Short passes.

Haskins is at 79% overall

Haskins is at 46% on passes over 10 yards - 6 completions.

Haskins is 88.8% on passes 9 yards and under - 32 completions

I think we'll see more of the short stuff from Burrow today.

You think we will see more short stuff from burrow because Haskins has a high completion percentage under 9 yards?

No. We'll see it because this slow developing crap ain't cuttin' it. And, Burrow can complete the short stuff even better than Haskins - JB has far better touch on the short passes.

If we don’t implement an intermediate passing game today I will lose any hope.

I think (hope) we'll see intermediate and long. But the longer stuff works much better when the DBs are forced to defend the short ball.

The short ball also messes up constant blitzes

I would imagine those statistics are true for every QB. Shorter passes are much simpler

It hasn’t been cutting it since the Cam Cameron days but we continue it. I wouldn’t hold your breath

Looks like OSU made the right call. It also looks like they don't have O and E calling plays. But hey, I bet their OC didn't sleep at the office this week, so we got that going for us.

I agree that we have to get the ball out quickly utilizing short routes, but Haskins has a quicker release than Burrow, which is harder to defend.

Maybe it’s because Haskins has a playcallwr who knows how to run an efficient offense and Burrow is stuck with a guy who still thinks max protect is the only way to protect the QB from a pass rush.

Does E even have any short to intermediate routes in his (Cam Cameron's) playbook?

Can't open up and run spread without short options.

Max protect - sure hope someone has talked E off that hopeless ledge. Particularly since Burrow is one of the few QBs who throw the short ball better than Haskins.

Ding ding ding.

OSU guy, you should know that Orgeron has a fixation with the USC offense of the early 2000s and we will run it to the bitter end.

Good God!!! So you are better at QB evaluation than Urban Meyers? How many college coaches, if any, would make the same choice as you?

Every QB metric says Haskins is the better QB. What metric are you using to come to your conclusion?

LOL !!! Meyer had always rated Burrow on the depth charts over Haskins until Burrow was injured.

And Burrow outplayed Haskins in the Spring game. Burrow left because Meyer failed to declare a starter after the Spring game (Meyer promised Burrow's family he would declare a starter within a week after the game)

It you watched the Ohio State games you would know why Haskins is competing 79% of his passes. He has alllll day to throw, very rarely has he been in 3rd and long (obvious passing downs). Most of the time the ball is out of Haskins hands and there still isn’t a defender within 5 feet of him. Sure he is hitting the short passes when he isn’t throwing on obvious passing downs. Joe has been in obvious passing downs far to often. The LSU O line has to improve not only in pass protection but also the penalties that are causing the 3rd and long situations. People keep saying Joe is holding the ball too long but if he threw the ball 3 yards when you need 10 I think you would feel differently. The 3rd and longs put Joe in a lose lose situation. His line can’t hold long enough for receivers to get to the sticks and get open. More short passes are nice but on 3rd and 15 it won’t really matter. Hopefully the changes on the line help. If they would just cut out the drive killing penalties I think LSU will be just fine today. Keep Joe in short yardage situations and they won’t have to be good in pass protection.

FYI Ohio State had similar problems the year they won the national championship. The new line made mistakes early in the season but cleaned up the issues towards the end of the season. Unfortunately last week for LSU was a lost week of line development due to the suspension and injury.
