well what makes casanova a "freak"?

Laron is 6'1 213lbs, runs a 4.35, has a 38 inch vertical and could bench 225 God knows how many times.
Not only was he a superb athlete as far as strength, speed, quickness, etc. go, but he put it together on the field. Laron wasn't the same type of "player" as a guy like Eric Berry is, but he isn't Taylor Mays either. There is actually some talent beyond his muscles. His stats at LSU only back up his "freakish" abilities.
You basically want to shoot down everyone's idea of a freak athlete, but saying LaRon or Peterson is a safe bet.

Look back and see how many completions past 20 yards were completed on USC last year. Taylor Mays is a big part of that.

I never said Webster was the fastest cornerback...I said he was the last truely exceptional "athlete" that has played for LSU.
PP may end up being as good or better, but it is difficult to make that case after last season. We have a couple of other current players that may prove to be the type of overall athlete that Webster was, such as C Jones and Shepperd...but they have not proven it yet.
Webster was not only an interception machine, he could have played at least 5 other positions and played them well, and he would have been our best return guy if he had been asked to do it. During the spring game before his senior year, he was the best athlete on the field, and it wasn't close, IMHO. You have to be pretty special to stand out like that on LSUs team.
BTW, how many picks did PP have last season? He has to prove some things before being listed as an alltime great at LSU. BTW, I am hopeful that he will.

The freak will be back on the field this season.
As another poster said, speed, strenght, free safety + 90 mph fb, and any other pitch asked for. I hate to call him a freak, but it is in a good way.
Chad Jones has it all. Hard to imagine anyone with this much talent. He will pick his trade and will excell at either or both !!

No I don't. LaRon was awesome in every category. I certainly would not suggest as the OP that you have to go back to T. Cassanova for pete's sake.

Xavier Carter was a freak. He just happened to not be a very good football player.

I don't disagree with you. Webster made more plays on the ball... but, in my opinion, P.P. is as good or better in coverage of WRs, strictly speaking.

Has anyone said Chris Jackson in this thread (it's too fricking long for me to read it all)? He gets my vote if we are considering all sports at LSU. Dude was the best shooter I've ever seen.
Posted on 8/9/09 at 7:44 pm to CreoleAubie
BUT, Billy Cannon was a freak as well....even for today's RB standards, the dude was pretty stout at 6'1" and 220 lbs. And he ran like a deer. (Again, if someone said this already, forgive me.)
Posted on 8/9/09 at 7:44 pm to CreoleAubie
No one has mentioned him... I guess we're mostly thinking f/ball, although someone mentioned Shaq. C.J. would be solid top 10 on my list.

I was referring to SFP, my bad.

Alonzo Manuel ran a 4.49 at 6'3 250, but he was a terrible football player.

i concur that xavier carter is a freak athlete

quote:Of course it's not your fault. It's nobody's fault because it isn't the case. LSU does sign and develop many freakish athletes. What is your fault is that you have fabricated an absurdly irrelevant definition of "athleticism" (so absurdly irrelevant that you yourself have gone so far as to insist that your definition of "athlete" has nothing whatsoever to do with the ability to play football), that you can exclude every reasonable example of a freakish athlete that has played football for LSU in the last few decades.
it's not my fault that LSU doesn't sign/develop many freak athletes
JaMarcus Russell, Trindon Holliday, Xavier Carter, LaRon Landry and many others were all freakishly athletic, by any rational definition whatsoever. Only someone deliberately seeking to advance an agenda (even one of simply stirring shite up) would attempt to deny it.

quote:Given this, and -- since you have already asserted that "athleticism" in your definition has nothing to do with ability to play football, how exactly does this thread fit into the Tigerrant subject matter? It has nothing to do with LSU football (since athleticism has nothing to do with playing football in your world), and you've excluded any other sport. So this clearly bears no relation to any LSU sport; why is it on the Rant? Shouldn't this be an OT board thread?
how "athletic" you are doesn't mean "how skilled are you?" or "how good of a player are you?"
Or to put it another way: since athleticism has nothing to do with ability to play football, why in the hell should anybody care whether we ever sign what you would define as a "freak athlete"?
On the other hand, it was nice for you to FINALLY come around and acknowlege that the combine results are absolutely zero reflection on the talent, ability or development of the players at LSU, and are thus not something anyone should ever give a flying frick about.

quote:So balance, reaction time, vision, coordination, body control . . . these are no longer physical abilities?
travis henry was a good example. small, short, not fast, but he was a natural runner
that's not physical ability. that's mental shite and doesn't belong in this debate
