When he had movies or books written about him or holds the NCAA scoring record for nearly 50 years come see me retard. You wouldn't recognize Big O but does that make him less famous?
It's Shaq, retards
What's the demographics today for number baby boomers versus young shits? Say if you said Pistol Pete in a crowd of average sports fans 75-35 I guarantee you more people know it than Shaq.
Oh and for the kicker he was a WHITE player making more than his black counterparts in the early 70's without proving anything. He was not liked by blacks because of how he played and revered by whites. It was far worse than the Magic versus Bird debate of the 80's who are far more famous than Shaq. NOBODY DEFINED HOW TO RECOGNIZE FAMOUS RETARD.

I see a lot of mention for Pistol Pete. I just don't think you can pull a random person off the sidewalk, show them a picture of pistol and get a correct answer. As mentioned, Shaq, OBJ is getting pretty well known besides football, and Lolo.
You have a point. A I think a picture of OBJ would be more recognisable for most people between 7 to 50 years old. However, I would expect that the name "Pistol Pete" would be recognisable for any basketball fan over the age of 25 and any sports fan over 30.

I'll go out on a limb and predict 5 years from now it'll be Trey Quinn.

Josh Booty, before he played football here. Dude was made out to be a hero. And then he suited up....

It's Pistol. Movies have been made and books and songs written about the life of the man.
How can there be any other answer?

shaq because he is on TV all the time. People recognize him and know him now more than magic and bird and maybe even jordan (today's generation)

We were in the Dominican Republic about 10 years ago on a mission trip. We were trying to describe to some kids about Louisiana. One guy mentioned Shaq. All of thi kids immediately knew about LSU and Shaq. It was pretty neat

Pistol, Y A Tittle, Shaq, Alvin Dark, Jimmy Taylor, Cannon, probably that order. Maybe include Steve Van Buren for real old-timers.

but let's face it, basketball was always in the shadow of football until Shaq came along.
I'd argue basketball was equal to football during at least part of the stretch from 1979-93. I was at LSU in the early-mid 80s, and the excitement and energy surrounding LSU basketball was as high as it was for football.
Sweet Sixteen 5 times between 1979-87
Final Four in 1981 and 86
Elite Eight 4 times between 1980-87
From 1979-93 made the NCAA Tourney every year but 2
