I've lived in Atlanta for 26 years; there is no best way. We make the trip home 4-5 times a year. The mileage difference through Mobile, Hattiesburg or B'Ham is about the same. You do want to avoid Atlanta between 4-7 pm if possible, esp on Fridays. If you go 85, get on 316 in Gwinnett county. Or take 285 to Hwy 78 to Athens.

Do I59. My fiance used to live in bham, so I think it is faster. Also, the stretch between Birmingham and Atlanta is really pretty. Also, very few cops on the road. I've prob made that drive 40 times

If you get bored on I-65, stop in Greenville at Bates House of Turkey about 40 miles south of Montgomery.
