Leslie - can't learn the playbook
do you know for a fact that he can't learn the playbook, or at least have a "source" telling you that? it looks like what really set him back - and this may be physically as much as getting up to speed in the scheme - is missing the spring. we had 4 experienced WRs here, and Dural went thru spring as well. dude got here late and weighs 175.

Smith isn't a good enough blocker to get more snaps.
I figured someone would post this. It may be true that Smith isn't a good blocker but that is true of many pass catching tight ends. I was hopeful when we got Cam that LSU would learn to utilize the tight end more effectively. The entire position (Gordon, Dickson, Smith) is averaging less than 1 catch per game for a total of 9 catches for the season. Smith is dangerous and could be such a mismatch for opposing defense. His pass catching, speed, and size can put DBs and linebackers at a disadvantage depending on the situation. If we don't learn to use special athletes like Smith I fear those type of kids might not come to LSU anymore. 1 catch for Smith is not enough. Even if he is used situationally Smith should have made some impact this year. The problem is none of our tight ends made any impact.

Leslie, better recievers in front of him. Not as good as advertised.
Smith, not physically ready. Needs to get moffitized. Dickson is a better fit as the pass catching TE right now.
Herron, maybe next year

quote:I bet Smith was pissed watching OJ Howard race down the field. CLM talks a good game, but when the stage gets bigger, the belt tightens up. Early in the season the play calling was wide open. As it got to the SEC schedule, the toss dive, and heavy offensive packages returned. I have never seen Cam Cameron run a toss dive in all my life. Trying to protect the defense by playing ball control offense hurt his team. He should have slung that pill all across the yard. Smith could have helped, but come spring ball, he'll talk about how they will utilize the mismatches...yea, all that damn coach talk.

Theyve been open, but Mett just has been throwing to beckham and landry. Its not like those are the only 2 guys that we send down field to catch the ball. And i think the coaches would rather the qb check down to other guys than throwing picks. They arent coaching him to throw to a double covered receiver.

You need to be able to run. the toss dive was our most effective run play last saturday. Hills longest runs of his career came off the toss dive. Cam has run the toss dive. Jimbo fisher runs the toss dive. It's not uncommon and not only something Les miles calls.

Leslie needed a year to add bulk/strength. He has still seen the field in mop up duty.
Smith is gonna be a good TE and has a ton of talent but honestly our passing game this year has consisted of two players, neither of which are TEs.
Herron got hurt right before coming to LSU and it set him back in his conditioning. He will redshirt.

Herron = came in overweight due to injury needs awhile to shed it
Leslie = came in undersized and wasn't as impressive as probably thought coming out of JUCO
Desean Smith = we don't use TEs

lol, no our QB just doesn't throw to em much. Mett actually threw to Smith early in the TCU game in the end zone, but TCU made a good play on the ball iirc. as other said, he's back down the depth chart with Dickson back.

I've been waiting to see Frank Herron all season. If you have a 5-star player, it doesn't may sense to hold him back. As it now appears in college football, that you have someone for 3 years at best. Play the man!
