LSU returns NINE players to it's "D" with some level of starting experience.

DB - Return six of top eight. Four with starting experience, Mills, Loston, J Collins and Martin. Fifth, Eugene played every game and #4 safety, Thompson that saw game action, even against the tide. Need to develop third and fourth corner.

LB - 100+ tackler in Barrow. Other two starters as of now are T Jones, fifth year SR and Welter fourth year Jr. Both have been through SEC battles. Know the system. Two of the three backups have started. Louis for half the year. Kwon started a couple and will be a STUD. D Jones is balls to the wall and will be another great one.

DL - Ego and Freak are just as talented and more experienced heading into '13 than Brockers and Logan were heading into '11.

Rasco, Allen and Hunter are a solid DE rotation to build upon.

Tigers need a couple of the D-linemen that have been in the system a few years, M Johnson, Thomas and Maclin to step up like others in the past. That would be a solid eight for the rotation.

Then IF at LEAST one or two freshmen come in to camp in shape with their head in the right place we will be OK along the D-line. Lacoture has a headstart there. He has looked above avg in a bunch of the practice vidos.

As a comparison.

bama returns 12 players that took defensive snaps VS LSU.

Considering Rasco was the #5 DE your assestment of PT is spot on. Thing is top three DEs are talented. Allen is in his fourth year and Rasco his third. They have seen the SEC up close. They know what's going on. Hunter is an elite athlete. He will make plays.

All the backups at LB and DB except whoever turns out to be the third and fourth CBs will have played serious SEC minutes heading into the '13 season.

The word inexperienced is relative. Many of our players on defense this year will be inexperienced compared to the opposing team.

Given equal talent levels, that usually is considered a disadvantage.

Its one thing to come off the bench fresh and go against a tired offensive lineman. Its alot different being the starter. Its personal between the two starters; nasty stuff.
Rasco- Promising but hurt right now shoulder at that.
Freak- Needs to be dominant, not average. Big disappointment to this point.
Ego- Im sorry i havent seen him play well yet
Allen/Hunter- Im skeptical
MLB- Welter is a big drop off from Minter

Throw in no depth except true freshmen and u can see why we are concerned. We need to be in better shape than this especially with our unforgiving schedule.

If the Freak dominates and the MLB plays well, we will be in the hunt. Even if that happens we will need to stay healthy to have any chance. Its a difficult assignment for Chavis, but he's the right guy for the job.

all played well young with no real experience.

That's a very different point than the one you questioned in your OP. They are undeniably inexperienced (as has been demonstrated), but no one is saying they will be bad. Most expect us to be good on defense.

But limited experience almost always limits how good a defense will be. Our greatest defenses have all had significantly more experience amongst the starters and backups than this season's defense will. Whether or not their greatness is limited by their inexperience remains to be seen. But history suggests it is a reasonable expectation.
