quote:So does every player on the team who is a backup and a junior get a standing ovation when they run onto the field?
Given that quitting under these type situations is a VERY common human phenomenon, ESPECIALLY among younger people, then yeah, it is worth taking note when someone chooses to stick it out when they do not have to.
quote:There are up and downs to being a QB at a major football power. The upside is much better than the downside. I don't agree with booing a player. However, it has happened to many players before Lee, and it will happen to lots of players after Lee. I don't recall any of them quitting because of it.
Getting booed by 90K people by 90K people when you're 19-20 yrs old aint very easy. I would argue that the vast majority of people his age could not handle such a situation and would run for the exit.
quote:Does every junior backup on the team get an ovation when they run onto the field? Seriously. The guy chose not to quit. I'm glad he didn't quit or transfer, but that is all he did. He hasn't done anything that any other member of the team hasn't done.
Ever ran a marathon or beat cancer?
Don't ever compare "not quitting" a Top 20 college football team as the backup quarterback to beating cancer. Lee is getting a full ride and access to all kind of perks. He is one injury away from starting.
He has already gotten a second chance, and he didn't do anything with it. He'll probably get a third and a fourth.
That's not really ovation worthy. Certainly no more than any other member of the team.

I hope he savors the huge ovation I expect he'll receive from the crowd. This kid is beyond mature. Despite some of those horrible INT's his freshman year, I greatly admired his courage facing the music after the games with the media. I also was ashamed for the treatment he received from a large number of the "fans..." I wish nothing but the best to JL & JJ, but if anyone deserves a warm reception from TS it is him. Feel free to pile on smart asses...
All the tiger fans will cheer him on just to boo him the next time he screws up??? I agree, though, he desirves arse-kissing from all of us assholes, especially WHEN he does well. I think his play will be contagious and help JJ play better too.

He has handled all the crap thrown his way with class. The kid has a huge set of Brass Balls..most would have quit or transferred.

So people DO get standing ovations for not quitting, it's just a question of when and why.
So for the most part, when Lee is 'called for duty', he does it to the best of his abilities. For that, I'd likely give him a standing ovation as a role model (not necessarily as a college kid that plays quarterback).
And to answer your question, yes, EVERY player should get a standing ovation for playing whether on a scholly or not. You do that after every game, right?

Does JJ get an ovation when he runs onto the field?
quote:First, that's not an ovation when they run onto the field.

Second, do the players get a standing ovation after the game if they lose? I don't recall that happening. So, maybe they get a standing ovation for winning, not just "not quitting"?

Some do get it when they lose, depends on the school.

and what happens when he throws for 300+ yds and 3 td's ?

You give the players a standing ovation after the game if they lose. Buy them some ice cream too. Oh, and I can get you in touch with a guy who makes trophies and ribbons for people who lose but don't quit.
You could go with Lifesavers, but that's probably too old school for today's players.
Of course, that's not really what this thread is about, is it.

I have given this some thought because I will be at the game with my son and want to teach him how to be a good fan. To each his own but here's mine:
I will cheer for the Tiger offense as it takes the field even though I do not believe #9 should start. When JJ makes a good play I will cheer of course. When he makes a JJ play I will NOT boo.
Logic tells me that we have what we have in JJ and so we should expect the QB to continue to hold the offense back with the result that it will come down to the final play, despite having the superior athletes. However, as a fan, I can hope. And I hope JJ uses this negativity as motivation. He was heavily criticized before the Auburn game and came out with attitude, playing one of his best games as a Tiger. If he does, HE deserves a standing ovation.
Back to reality. If JJ performs poorly a Lee takes the field, I will be tempted to cheer loudly to applaud THE DECISION by Miles. But that is a kissing cousin to booing JJ. So I will cheer the offense the same way as when JJ led them. I want to see Lee do something before giving him extra cheers for just not being JJ. If Lee starts hitting passes and leading the team, then the ovation will come.
In short, cheer whoever is the QB to take the field, show fan appreciation for good play and don't boo.

you should admire the kid for what he and his family went through.. His Mom left one of the games in 08 crying because of all the cussing and yelling by the Fans sitting around her..
