And therein lies the problem, myself included. I think we've become spoiled (I know I have) in that wins alone are no longer satisfying; we want to see total domination. I know I'm wrong in my expectations but I can't help it. We used to OWN the first quarter.

You must also understand that those 9 wins came with an EXTRA game that teams of the past didn't have. Ever since college football added the extra game it is usually non conference home game against a cupcake. this is truly an 8-4 ball club.

Munch - When you drag the coach through the MUD on a daily basis do you honestly think you are helping the Tigers and the Team?

Since we've won 2 national championships and we've lost to Florida, Alabama and Ole Miss two years running. 9-4 in the SEC is mediocre and won't get you to championship games.

the season basically turned out about as projected, so it would hardly be a disaster...but it was disappointing since the team really didn't progress as the year went along.

Great post. The true measure is conference record, and going 500 is under achieving. Don't be mis-lead by the THREE in-state rent-a-wins.

11 wins is the new benchmark. anything less is not going to cut it.

9-4 isn't a disaster, and for better or worse we were competitive in all our games—no 51-21 or 31-13 blowout losses as happened in 2008. Just the same, in how many games last year did the Tigers look really impressive? I count the Auburn game and that's about it. All too often, even in winning, the team got pushed around on both sides of the ball, continued to pile up execution (e.g. delay of game) penalties, and got virtually no traction on offense. This in addition to inattentive coaching and sloppy game management.

It's odd that a 9-4 season should produce more areas of concern than hope, but that's how the 2009 season played out. And this is where the discontent lies, particularly with the competence and leadership of our very highly paid coaching staff.

When you pay your head coach $3.8 million and his coordinators $450000+.

Hell, if we are comfortable at 9-4, let's cut our losses and fire miles now so we can lose that salary.

We can then go and pay and up an coming coach less than half that amount and set ourselves up to be average for the entire decade. We can get use to the Chicken bowl, liberty bowl, and too bad we don't have the indy bowl tie in.

Its not the record. Its watching a game knowing you are probably going to lose.

Aside from the UF/Bama games (they were 1/2), how many times were you right?

[quote]4 or more losses 38 times in 80 seasons...

9 wins only 24 times in the same length of time...

That's a tall order, fellas.[quote]
we had ZERO quality wins.
Our schedule was actually WEAK! (GO LOOK AT THE '87 schedule as am example.
AND I think the conference was down overall despite the Bama and Fla wins.
We were clearly better than Penn State at all positions EXCEPT defensive line and linebacker, but failed to take advantage of it. The field didn't make us call shitty plays.
In 2007 we lost to teams we shouldn'y have and won BARELY against teams we should have.
We had 4 first rounders in the 2007 NFL draft as (Landry, Bowe, Davis and Russell) despite Les Miles.

I know I'm probably just as much to blame as everyone else. I expect dominance and at least some serious contention in the SEC West. But in my opinion, the LSU fanbase has peaked in terms or reasonability. 2 years removed from a national title, and an 8 win and 9 win season are not acceptable to most. I don't think there's any real way to improve on it in this division, because of the monster we created in terms of the football arms race makes. It isn't logistic to be able to dominate and win it every single year. I don't think Les Miles has what it takes to be able to do that, but I don't think anyone else on the planet does either. So my guess is the fans here become more accepting, and probably get in the mix for an SEC Championship every 4 or 5 years. Or we continue to set the goals ridiculously high and rarely reach them until the program is in the dirt. At least the bandwagon will be a lot lighter...

You're going to miss those 2 loss days the longer Les is around. He's rolling 4+ now and it's not getting better.

It is not about setting high goals. It is about seeing players continously improve to their perceived talent level. Unless we are recruiting guys that don't fit our program, we can't say we don't have the talent level (go look at the last 4 recruiting classes rankings).

1. We expect more because of our talent level.

2. We expect more because we have excellent facilities.

3. We expect more because our coach is one of the highest paid in the country.

4. We expect more because "We are LSU"!
