What were your initial thoughts?

grasping at straws, perhaps???

vigorously defend the pass and maybe hope to force an INT or 2, since Cam is statistically good at beating the blitz??

giving up the run to stop the pass...means more clock eating drives, hence less possessions per game.

Offense must come through to match AU's scores, and maybe this was Chavis's biggest gamble.

Defense can't win it alone. ST was huge, but the O can't get it going and this is why we lost.

It's easy to look back and criticize Chavis, but he had to try something...no one else has stopped Cam so far.

Conventional wisdom was to play it straight, and account for Newton in the run game. In hindsight, I don't know if spying would have helped. We kept scores off the board, except for a couple of big plays. Would being designated a "spy" make the guy a better tackler? The best tackle of the night was Sheppard tackling that decoy back as Newton ripped off another big game.

Conventional wisdom may have been wrong, but there are so many variables. This game really came down to three or four plays. It always does in close games.

I don't think you can effectively blitz someone that is so good on the read option. It basically allows him to flesh it out each time and either hand it off for the inside gash or keep it to run outside, based on where the pressure is coming. I simply think that it's an ineffective choice considering who were were scheming against.

No need for a spy when you can't ackle. Numerous times we had Newton or the RB's behind the line and let them go with arm tackles

Yeah Brandon Taylor's angle on the 70 yard touchdown was awful.

I would hve moved Peterson to safety and had him spy Cam; however, the defense still held AU to 24 points and still got LSU the ball on offense(TOP was pretty close). I really don't give a shot about yards if the other two factors of PA and TOP are ok.

Why the frick to people care how many yards they had on offense?

Yeah I don't really care about that. I knew going in that holding them under 30 was a success. That's what we did. Our offense was simply as bad as we knew it was and couldn't muster a whopping 25 against the worst defense in the conference.

shite, the defense held auburn to 17 points for the longest. The offense had 3 opportunities in the second half to get ONE score at least, and squandered every opportunity.

You can't do that against a good football team, er, Cam.

LSU consistently played 6 in the box against a full offensive line, H-back, and Cam Newton running. They simply pulled the left guard, lead with the H-Back, and outnumbered/sealed everyone!!!! They ran the same play 17 times! We're playing DB's over 20 yards off the line? Were we playing Texas Tech when Leach was there? No adjustments were ever made?
Old Adage: When somebody is beating you to death with their right hand, stop the right hand!!!! If they are able to beat you with something else, then so be it---but STOP the right hand that is currently beating the shite out of you!!!!

I'm sorry I refuse to believe that one man is responsible for the downfall of a defense entirely composed of potential All-Americans. We just simply did not make the tackles.

I don't think the idea of having a spy is necessarily the way to go, but the overall point is that Chavis was stubborn and refused to adjust to Auburn's offense.

Whether you call your extra man in the box a spy or not, whatever the hell you decide to do, you need another body up there to stop the run.

I don't like the idea of a spy on a player like Newton because I prefer to contain great players with defenders on both sides, rather than have one guy trying to chase him around on wild goose chases. Still, I suppose a spy could have worked.

Anything would have worked better than what LSU actually did. No run pressure at all. No help to the guys in the middle getting outmanned with numbers. No plan for how to stop AU's runners when they decided to bounce outside and our CBs had to try to break off from guarding receivers and stop guys who were already coming at them with pulling blockers and a full head of steam.

It was stubborn and stupid what LSU's defense did yesterday. If your opponent cannot complete a single downfield pass on you for the entire game, then you probably should go ahead and concentrate on stopping the run.
