What’s with all the Mississippi State love?

In most polls Mississippi State is rated over LSU. I get that preseason polls are meaningless and i don’t really care where there are rated. I just find it interesting a team with a new coach and a qb coming off a serious injury is thought of so highly.
Over the last four years LSU has triple the number of 4 and 5 star players. I also get that star ranking is not a perfect science and that State beat LSU bad last year. But they also got blasted by a couple teams and lost the egg bowl to a depleted Ole Miss team.
I give State a hat’s off for whipping LSU last year, but I still think that game was an outlier and that State lacks the talent of top SEC teams. LSU went on to beat Auburn who ran all over State. On top of that State lost Mullen and their qb had bad injury at the end of the season.
Despite the fact Fitzgerald ran all over LSU, he is not a very good passer. Who knows how healthy he is.
Like I said, the preseason ratings are no big deal. I am just not buying the hype on State. I have State, Arkansas and Ole Miss as bottom tier SEC West teams. I have Bama at the top. 2,3 and 4 in the West will be who among LSU, Auburn and the Aggies gets the right bounces and wins the the close games.
State under Mullen did a great job winning with lesser talent. They should enjoy their ranking now, I don’t see them as a top 20 team at the end of the season. As for their new coach, I bet 80 % of fans outside of Strarksville couldn’t tell you who he was.
It’s Jim Moorehead. He’s a bright guy and a great hire for them. LSU fans should keep an eye on him. If State finishes ahead of LSU the next couple of years, Moorehead will be on our list.
As Bum Phillips famously said, a good coach is one who can take mine and beat yorn, then take yorn and beat mine. There is still a big disparity of talent between LSU and State. Mullen outcoached Orgeron last year. If we don’t finish over State this year, it will be a good sign of a coaching issue.

They return 18 starters from a team that ran us off the field last year, including two potential AA on the DL.
Why would they be rated behind LSU... at the moment? Oregon has never proven too effective against msu

Well for one their AD thought enough of their team to conduct a real coaching search and hire an up and coming candidate...
Ours picked the first guy near him with an accent and called it a day.

Rather prove people wrong.

They did beat LSU at home. But over the remainder of the season LSU played better and ended up ranked higher.
I’m not saying they are a bad team. I just think they overachieved with Mullen and that with a new coach and a runnning qb coming off a major injury people are over rating them.

I should also add State finished 4-4 in the West last year, LSU was 6-2.
Yes State beat LSU, but in the end they were not a top SEC West team. They have some starters back, but it’s not a super talented group. They had a couple really bad losses last year to more talented teams.

And many people favor Moorhead as an offensive coach over Mullen.

Probably the best Dline n Sec. solid D overall. Good oline good qb. Unproven Wr. Imo outside of Bama and UGa state is our toughest opponent

I mean, you bring up good points, but the fact is, they whipped our asses And bring back the whole team that did it.
I think we will not only beat Mississippi state, but will be the better team overall this season. But it just blows my mind that some of you don't understand why outside perception is the way it is. 37 to 7.

Regardless of whether they beat LSU, they still went 4-4 in the SEC last year.
Let's say this year that they beat LSU again and don't frick up against Ole Miss. This assumes losing Mullen and replacing him keeps the team at the same level as last year.
Then they would have to beat Arkansas again (beat them by 7 last year) as well as an A&M team expected to better than last year. They get Kentucky again, likely win, and trade out Georgia for Florida. While admittedly an easier game, the Florida game certainly should be a toss up.
And don't forget Alabama and Auburn, two likely losses. Bama gonna Bama and Auburn beat the brakes off State last year.
While 6-2 in the SEC is foreseeable, I think 5-3 is more likely. Going 4-4 again could certainly happen if their coach is a bust.
We're looking a 4-4 team returning with a new coach. Keeping the status quo means going 9-3 or 8-4.

18 returning starters.
LSU lost starting QB, RB, WR, 2 CB's, and DE. That is a lot to replace.

18 starters return. Loaded at the line of scrimmage. Good QB, 2 solid RB's, better at WR and CB than last year.

There is still a big disparity of talent between LSU and State. Mullen outcoached Orgeron last year.
That night the disparity was in the favor of MS State as far as the 22 who were on the field. They were bigger, stronger, more experienced, and much deeper in roster strength than LSU and Bill Bellichek couldn't have taken LSU's roster and beaten Miss State that night. Not with only 3 interior D linemen, including one freshman, on a 90 degree night.

They handed us our arse last year.

And if the same LSU team that got beat so bad in Starkville was coming back unchanged, you'd have a point.
As 2017 season wore on, LSU got better and Miss. St. stayed the same. The Bulldog lost to both Auburn and Ole Miss, two teams LSU beat after that game.
This year, we have a lot of new faces, like Burrow, Giles, and Fehoko who didn't play last year.
This will be a much better LSU team. Deeper everywhere except CB.
LSU will beat Miss St. in 2018. I guarantee it.

Starkville is a shite town and Mississippi is tied for the biggest bumfrick state with Arkansas.
I expect us to beat them this year. We comin’

I'm not convinced Miss St is really a powerhouse but their schedule breaks perfectly and they're positioned to be 6-0 (no worse than 5-1) going into the LSU game, which comes after a BYE WEEK ADVANTAGE for the Dogs.
LSU catches them in between Georgia and Alabama. Fortunately for the Tigers all three games are at home, so we're looking at either an impressive stretch (given LSU's history as a home team) or a gigantic disappointment.
