What would you change IF you were AD for a year?

I'd probably fire Mainieri unless he got a better hitting/third base coach. He has until June to prove that the LSU letters on the jersey have nothing to do with his performance.

Second, I'd put Les Miles on notice. If the offense isn't ranked above 75 nationally in total yards, he's fired a John Chavis will help me pick a head coach.

I wouldn't touch men's basketball. Women's would get this year as a free ride as well. No complaints about softball or volleyball. Track needs no discussion. Women's soccer is no big deal but we'd like to be more competitive. I'm sure I'm missing something. I gave you my $0.02, what's yours Mr. AD?

I thought it but forgot to type it. The gymnastics are fine in my book. No changes. The band need to improve their line formations. They were subpar this year. Also, I would force the band to quit playing 70's crap at halftime and add some 80's and 90's stuff. Ban Gamgnam Style

So what you are essentially saying is that you would make quick emotionally based decisions that would put the Athletic Department and TAF on the hook for about 20 million dollars in coaching staff buyouts. Smart move! You would be quickly shown the door. Now I understand why you are posting on a message board and not overseeing an $80+ million Athletic Dept.

Interesting you say this my friend. I'd make sure the BoD would not approve Miles pay raise or extension.

There! I just saved us Millions of $. Are you happy?

P.S. No shite this is a message board and I could give two shuts about TAF. Oh yeah, I'd put off the suite expansion because ultimately the market will be over saturated with available tickets. Goodbye Deaf Valley.

I sincerely hope you realize that running an athletic department is running a business; and at LSU that is a very successful business. Business decisions should never be made based upon emotions.

Tell me how you would accomplish this.

You would not last two days as the AD. The TAF is the engine that powers the vehicle of LSU athletics.

ETA: When the powers that be at the TAF chacked that whip, your only job as the AD is to say, "Thank you sir, may I have another."

As to your first question, me being the AD I would simply play it as out of my hands while telling the board we shouldn't do it. No blood on my hands. They wouldn't do it if I told them not to.

TAF is not my concern. My concern is the product on the field. I know where the money comes from and who pays what. If I can't get a good product on the field then that money goes away no matter what. TAF would trust me to make the right decisions and personally if they don't then I'd prove it the one year I was AD.

Any more problems you have a-hole? This a purely hypothetical but it seems to strike a nerve with you. Are you on the board? Are you a mover of TAF? Do you work for LSU or any body associated with the atheltics? I answered your questions now you answer mine.

No offense, but you would be a terrible AD. You would also be a terrible CEO of any business. AD's aren't dealing with the minutia of where the offensive yard ranks are for the football team. They care about wins because wins, regardless of how they happen, are what puts butts in the seats and CLM and Mainieri do that better than damn near anyone in the country.

The name on the jersey is only as good as the team playing in it, which encompasses every one associated with that team including coaches.

Lastly, if 85-21 with 3 SECCG appearances, 2 SECC, 2 NCG appearances with 1 NC over and 8 year stretch is good enough to get you fired because a stat wasn't good enough for the AD, good luck getting any good coach to come here. LSU would be back to 6-6 or worse in no time. It's a terrible business move to take a job where the expectations are unrealistic (ie - winning isn't good enough).

Not at all. I'm just laughing at your lack of understanding of how the system works. You are really making a fool out of yourself. If the "Powers that Be" didn't want to give Miles a raise - no raise would have been extended by the AD to Coach Miles. Let's just say that the AD didn't make the decision to raise Coach's pay, he was tasked with the responsibility of getting the deal done. You are looking at the situation backwards.

Are you on the board?
If by board you mean the LSU Board of Supervisors then the answer is No, but will add - in a past life I was in a position to experience the inner workings of the BOS and the La. political power structure.

Are you a mover of TAF?

Not my profession.

I do not work for LSU, I live and work in Silicon Valley. As to who my clients are, well that will not be discussed on a message board.

Firing Mainieri and giving Miles an ultimatum would get you run out by the TAF. These people aren't fanatical about LSU as much as they are fanatical about money and to remove or threaten two of the most successful head coaches at the school and certainly the HCs of the most profitable sports would not win trust in you.

I deal with CEO-types and big spenders, they look at everything from a business standpoint, not a fan standpoint. Unless you have the next head coach lined up and you can prove that they would be better than what's currently in place, you wouldn't get anywhere with the BoD or the TAF. Especially now with the money issues that the state and all it's universities are dealing with currently.

I am looking at through a business standpoint. I look at the AD as a GM of a university's atheltics. Winning solves every problem. It makes you look like a genius. Losing exposes your weaknesses. I pointed out the two weaknesses of two major sports at LSU. They can be improved and with that the team improves. More wins and more people at the games.

I know it's hard for you to see with your glasses on but if we don't win a championship in the next 2 years in the 3 major sports it will be the longest drought since the 80's.

You are missing the point. You currently have your seats maxed out. You are currently 1 game behind the "dynasty" that is Alabama over the past 3 years. You can't get any more people into the games. You do however risk making a bad hire and the program backslides and then you lose potential revenue. There is no reward and significant risk to firing or threatening the HCs of the two most successful sports at the school. TS seats 92,500+, we averaged 92,600+ at the home games in 2012 and that is with a rainy Towson home game bringing the average down. You can't get more people into the stadium. The same can be said about baseball. Your fanbase is showing up. There aren't any fans refusing to go to either the football games or baseball games because of the offensive coordinator or the hitting coach.

Please understand, as a fan, I want a better hitting coach and I want a legit OC but as an AD, these are decisions that get delegated down to the HC and he is responsible for success on the field(ie. win games, compete and win championships). Reality is both Mainieri and Miles have won NCs at the school and both have won SEC championships recently.

Very true (SEC c'ships) and that buys them both time. College football changes rapidly now. Texas A&M is a program almost even with us already if not so. Ole Miss is up and coming. The days of LSU living off of the defense are going to be a lot tougher in the upcoming years.

Les needs to get the offense going or the time that is on his side right now will not last long.

Fan talk, nothing to do with the business aspect of the job.

Where are you going to seat them? Presently there is a very long waiting list for season tickets and you have previously decided to scrap or delay the building of the SE expansion. Brilliant businessdecision on you part.

You as AD would not last a week. Do what you do best, be a fan and support your team.

I'd propose modifying South Endzone expansion to incorporate tail gaiting suites with ground floor patios and second floor balconies. A wide sidewalk would encourage a level of pedestrian traffic. It would be a perfect perch to see and be seen. This would be to help generate more revenue and fan interaction much like you see along Mardi Gras parade routes.

So basically you would just relegate your very important position to just hiring/firing coaches? Sounds like you'll have a successful career

Since as you put it,

quote:

This a purely hypothetical

I would, as AD:

1. Forge ahead with the SEZ expansion. More seats and suites to sell to those on the present long waiting list for season tickets and suites. More seats = more $$$$.

2. Realizing that LSU is in a "nuclear arms race" facilities wise with the elites of college athletics, I would be in discussion with the TAF about funding a replacement for the PMAC. The reasons being twofold: (1) The present structure will always need rehabbing and (2) I would like the new multi-purpose arena to be in a different location; because

3. I would commission feasibility studies into a North End Zone Expansion for Tiger Stadium and be in discussion with TAF on that point. Envision if you will a 115 - 120K+ capacity showcase filled with rabid Tiger Fans. Intimidating now, lets add 20,000 more screaming psychos. Oh yeah, more seats and suites = more $$$$.

4. As part of the NEZ expansion, hotel-style suites would be built into the infrastructure, accessible from the exterior, and being made available for rental on an annual basis available for occupancy on days of LSU sporting events for the heavy hitters and their entertainment needs. Would consider also offering same with catering and adult beverage service. Major cha-ching! This would also provide a game day experience that no one else in the country would be able to provide. Additionally the 4 to 6 "Penthouse" Suites would have a view of the action on the field.

5. The hotel/entertaining suites in the proposed NEZ expansion would be the first step in 10 to 20 year asbestos removal/conversion of the old North, South and East Stadium Dorms into both suites and individual hotel rooms. Rooms available on a per game basis. Once again providing a game day experience like no other.

Occupancy of suites and rooms = revenue.

6. My staff (Verge) would be charged with providing a marquee match-up with the USCs, Texases, Michigans, etc. of the world on an annual basis, to be played in Tiger Stadium. A game that the national networks would drool over to televise in Prime Time. Additionally, the Athletic Department would charge a premium for said game = $$$$$$.

7. I would encourage my staff to be continually on the look out/brainstorming for ways to improve our facilities that will give LSU a recruiting advantage.

8. I would increase recruiting budgets across the board. Of course, on a percentage basis football would see the largest increase in budget and encourage a more "National" recruiting philosophy.

9. I would work with our Championship winning coaches to develop and retain highly performing coaching staffs.

Just a few ideas off the top of my head.

End of Business 1001 lesson.

Oh, by the way, do I get the job?
