Football and it isn't close. By far the most demanding and competitive of the three. Les more than holds his own against opponents with resources equal to or greater than LSU's.

Baseball is played by like 20 schools, and it isn't like PM is owning the shite.

Yeah, but Les is top 5-10 of like 120 D1 coaches. How many D1 baseball programs are there? 60? How many have near the resources of LSU?

I hope you're trolling. There are 302 Division 1 College Baseball programs. And the "resources of LSU" thing works for football and baseball.

CPM isn't top 10 in his sport. Get that thought out of your mind, pal.

Skip Bertman disagrees with you. I'm sure you are right and he's wrong though.

2009 Article on CPM

quote:

"In my mind, for the total package, he's the best coach in America," Bertman said.

quote:

"He has what I refer to as "magic dust,"gut," Bertman said. "His gut feelings, or instincts, are terrific. The great ones have that. The good ones practice hard and do all the other things, but you got to have that gut.

"This is what I mean: He plays player X, he responds. The next day he sees the wind blowing a certain way and plays player Y instead of X and player Y responds. Paul has that magic dust."

Maybe Mainieri needs to sprinkle some magic dust in Javi's tacos

Skip Bertman also thought Smoke Laval was going to be a good coach for LSU baseball!

Your point? Mainieri has proven his worth and all of his peers agree. I'll still put more stock in Bertman's opinion than anyone on this board.

Back to the OP. Their resumes are actually quite similar. Both have 1 National Title, 2 SEC Titles, and 3 Western Division Titles. Both play in the toughest conference in the country as well. You could really go either way here. They are both easily top 10 in their respective sports.

ETA: Mainieri has 4 Western Division titles. Wiki is wrong lol.

My point is that just because Bertman said he was the best overall coach doesn't mean jack shite. Maineri coaches like he's in little leauge.

People have educated opinions. Those with a higher level of education on the matter, tend to have a more reliable opinion. Thus, Bertman's opinion on the quality of a coach that Paul Mainieri is likely to hold more weight than yours lol.

I don't think that's what he meant. You not being able to understand that speaks to your educational background IMO.

I know what he meant. He was saying he has a better educated guess about baseball then me because he was a great baseball coach. I got it.

And I frankly don't care what anyone's opinion on Maineri is. I don't like him and I think he's a good but not great coach. He makes some moves that make no sense at all if you understand baseball.

We've all bitched about some of his moves. You're taking it a bit to far. We were in Omaha last year.

I'm sure Skip would've thrown PM under the bus after he won a NC.

Since I'm obviously not going to convince you of PM's mediocrity, I'll just leave this here.
Smoke was 210-109-1 in his 5 years at LSU. PM was 210-102-2 in the same time span.

PM = Smoke with more talented players, regardless of what Skip says.

Um that article was written before we played Virginia at the CWS so Mainieri hadn't won anything yet. Maybe you should open the link before laughing

And I'm not dumbing myself down to your level if you believe Smoke and PM are the same level of coach.
