I'd kind of like them to stick to Heisman winners.

And if we go to three, Faulk should be given strong consideration for the 3rd spot. Not that I think he was a better RB than, say Charles Alexander or even Dalton Hilliard, but Faulk did so much more. If there was a Heisman for all-purpose back, he would have won it, possibly twice.

Other top contenders for the third spot should be the aforementioned "Alexander the Great" and Glenn "Putt" Dorsey. For another defender, I toss Mike Anderson's name in the hat, but really, after Cannon, Casanova, Kevin Faulk, "Alexander the Great", and Dorsey, there is somewhat of a drop to the next tier.

ETA: Of course, if a Coach's name is to be placed on a sign in the stadium, really only two merit consideration:

Bernie Moore

Charles McClendon

LSU five immortals:

Doc Fenton
Gaynell Tinsley
Billy Cannon
Tommy Casanova
Glenn Dorsey

Everyone else is a little behind those above.

There are a with problems with Y.A.:

1st. He never was an All American.

2nd. He never was 1st team All SEC.

3rd. Y.A. did make 2nd team All SEC in 1946 and 47.

Y.A. was one of the top QB's in the nation in college, but like Dalton Hilliard had the misfortune to play when there was a number of better players in the nation at his position.

John Lujack, Notre Dame
Bobby Layne, Texas 4 time All SWC

etc.

And I didn't leave them out intentionally. However, the legend of those two (and with some justification) has grown with the passage of time. I won't dispute that they could be listed in the same tier as the top guys, but aren't necessarily higher than Alexander and Faulk. Alexander still holds some LSU rushing records, and LSU has produced about a dozen NFL running backs in the 30 years since. And, again, had there been a Heisman for all-purpose yards, Faulk might have won it twice.

So if Cannon is a clear "Number 1" among legends (which I waver on from time to time) is Casanova the clear "Number 2", or does it get muddy immediately?

Doc Fenton in 1908 lead LSU is rushing yards, passing yards, return yards, punting, scoring, td's. fg's, xp's, interceptions which will never be equaled.

I have talked to Tex about Doc and how Camp's all american teams are near a joke, as he only saw 20 games a year at max; and he doesn't have a single southern player on his team until 1918.

He did not see enough games to pick a real AA team. Just think today we get to see near 12-15 games a week, which is near 200 a year counting the bowl games.

John W. Mayhew, Brown was an All American in 1906 and 2nd team in 1908 and Fenton was far better than him. Mayhew coaches the 1909 LSU team after Joe Pitchard resigns.

Gaynell Tinsley had he played at Michigan, USC, Ohio State, Notre Dame would have been a 3 time All American, the same goes for Fenton; as he would have been a 2 time AA, once at end and qb.

Gaynell is more of DE than wr/te type, he had 4 blocked punts his so. year alone.

I think the criteria should specify having been out of school for 20 years or more.

The professional career has not yet developed.
Yes they were good at LSU, but they should have also been good at pro for an extended period.

The CRITERIA should be decided on first, then the names come.

And another difficult point is that it is very hard to compare eras. Doc and Gus had a level of versatility (pre-specialization, best 11 guys pretty much played every play) that is relatively unknown today (Cannon also played multiple positions well, as did Casanova, but that era had ended by the mid-70s). That's why it helps Faulk as a "modern" legend because of his versatility, to be compared with those guys back then.

But Tigger, what about my question(s)? Do you think that Cannon is clearly, "Number 1"? If so, is there a clear "Number 2" (and is it Casanova), or does it get relatively muddy.

I would think that they should at least be in the College Football Hall of Fame. Here's the other LSU players in there now:

Tommy Casanova
Doc Fenton
Ken Kavanaugh
Abe Mickal
Gus Tinsley

Here's their criteria:

Each player nominated must have: (1) received major first-team All-America recognition; (2) played his last intercollegiate game at least 10 years previously; (3) retired from playing professional football; and (4) proven himself worthy as a citizen after his football career, carrying the ideals of football forward into his community.

if any,

Jeff Boss
Sam Nader (has been at LSU for over 30 years)

then:
Casanova
Stovall
Faulk
Dorsey

Taylor, Van Buren, and Y.A. should also get consideration b/c they're HOF's, but the guys above had better college careers.
