I honestly think that’s our biggest deficiency so far. We get ourselves into position to blow up plays and make tackles for losses only to let the QB/RB/WR slip away and make something out of nothing due to absolutely atrocious tackling from LSU defenders.

I think 2023 and 2024 have been the worst tackling LSU defenses that I’ve seen in a really long time. Are there any drills that can be done to improve it? I thought tackling would improve drastically with Blake Baker, but it really hasn’t. Perhaps it will just take more time.

The awful tackling is so infuriating and very difficult to watch.

Bring in the coaches that I had when I was 10. Fundamentals. Quit trying to make a highlight reel tackle.

No lie.. I really can’t remember a time recently where we just laid the wood on someone. It’s been a very long time..

They’re not allowed to hit and tackle anymore so you have to recruit guys who’ve already been developed into great tacklers.

Keep our 5* DB Sage Ryan on the bench. He avoids contact like I've never seen before. Pitiful...

You can blame the non tackling on undersized players and slower to ball than your top LSU defenses of the past.

I agree. Our defenders are not big enough and strong enough to WANT TO tackle properly. these thud attempts are really sickening to watch.
Our dbs especially avoid big hits way more often than not. When you watch replays and two or 3 guys are in position to make a tackle, generally at least two of them will slow down and watch the others....basically avoiding an attempted tackle. So when the only one that actually attempts the tackle, with a high thud tackle and misses, the others just watch the ball carrier gain considerable more yardage.
Watching the really good defensive teams, they are all aggressive, strong well schooled tacklers. We used to have the bodies to do that. We are a weak team all around compared to our better d teams in the past.

Whiffing or overrunning a sideline tackle is inexcusable. You learn this in pee wee - use the sideline to your advantage. Break down and force the player out of bounds. You don't even need to put him on the ground just force him out. If you come 100mph and runner cuts back, you're fricked. Don't be dumb, use your brain.

Think this went by you.. we usually mean a decleating Tee off hit coming downhill.

No one said the defense didn’t play well

Does this ever happen in cfb anymore? Without a penalty?

Yeah, I could name you about 5 that happened to Daniels that weren’t flags.

The comment was to the OP saying we are just trying to highlight tackle.

This is 100% correct. I’ve watched Stamps do this entirely too much this year

It’s simple, you have to practice it, you have to put the pads on and tackle. That’s what every good DC I’ve heard talk about it say. Sounds obvious but that’s what it comes down too, consistently tackling each other in practice.

I think there are two major reasons why our tackling, and indeed, in much of college football, is so bad.

One is the fear of getting hurt. Somehow, somewhere tiger defenders have come to believe that they are going to get hurt if they aggressively tackle a defender. That can be fixed in practice. I always believed that the aggressor was the least likely to get hurt in a violent confrontation on a football field.

The second reason is that the NCAA has taken aggression out of tackling by penalizing anything That gives the appearance of an aggressive tackle. There is the constant fear of being disqualified in a game. They have gone too far with this and have ruined the game. Not much you can do about this one.
