Westbank is ok, though low rate. It's a short hop to the Quarter. Check out uptown on St. Charles. I stayed at the Parkview for $75 a night, though I have no idea of the rate now. You can catch the streetcar to Canal and is right nest door to Audubon Park. Also check out some of the smaller B & B's in the Treme across Rampart from The Quarter. But be careful of where you go in The Treme.

If you are looking for cheap safe hotels in and around the quarter, these are my recommendations.
1. St. Ann Marie Antoinette Hotel-this place was made for drunk single guys who tear shite up. bring your own sheets/pillows/blankets unless you like to be scratched to death by the bed linens. This place is yukky, but LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. You can do cartwheels to bourbon st. Don't expect anyone to carry your bags, park your car, or answer the phone when you call the front desk.
2. St. Louis Hotel-a step above St. Ann Marie Antoinette. Primarily used more for courtyard weddings than a hotel. But the hotel itself mostly needs room updates and better customer service and they would be a pretty decent place to stay. LOCATION is perfect...cartwheels to bourbon st.
3.Royal St. Charles Hotel-located across canal from the quarter, but still safe walk to bourbon St. Basic, no frills hotel. about the same as St. Louis Hotel maybe a half step better. Tend to offer good room rate specials.
4. Bienville House Hotel-a step above the Royal St. Charles. Recently renovated and I really like this location. It's in the quarter, but facing the river. block or two from bourbon. Tend to have good room rate specials.
5. International House-the best of all 5, definitely a boutique hotel. A girl won't mind staying here. located across canal from the quarter but still a safe walk to bourbon. tend to have room rate specials.

The W Hotel in the business district (not the one in the Quarter). You can get some decent deals, and while it's a little quirky in its room finishings, it's a great location. Near the Quarter, the Dome, not that far from the Warehouse District.

Did you check out the hostels?

Is it dumb to stay on the west bank? I can't afford 250 a night on a college budget.
do you have a military id of any sort? navy lodge in algiers is a lot cheaper....

ill give you my room for $100 a night and you have to wear LSU gear for as long as youre in my house.
I was thinking this too as I live in the Warehouse District and will be in Orlando for Cap 1, but I wouldnt let a Florida fan anywhere near my place. No offense, I hate that school though. Tebow will probably give you a place to stay, or he could build you a quick house...

There is a newly renovated Holiday Inn on the Westbank Expressway. 5 minutes from the Dome and CBD.

Only problem we had staying on the West Bank was getting a cab to go over there. Some of them don't want to go over the bridge.
We stayed at the Naval Lodge which is cheap and clean (we got it for 78.00 a night during the National Championship in '07), but you need a military ID for that. I'd try Metairie before I tried the West Bank, but that's just my opinion. And if you can't afford the quarter, try the hotels down St. Charles. You can grab the streetcar to get back to your hotel room and save yourself the cab fare.
Have fun!

Very near Harrahs and river walk
One block off burbon
check into these. They are in great locations and not that expensive. I have stayed in both many times.

Stay in Covington if you want a safe area and relatively cheap hotels.
+1 - if you're only going to be in town for a couple of days/night the Northshore (Covington/Mandeville/Slidell) might work.
