Would you be arguing the same thing if the play had happened with the teams reversed?? That is the question.
Yes.

quote:Really. I immediately turned to my wife and said that that was not interference and I saw it at the same time and the same speed as the ump did.
I personally think there wasn't enough there for the ump not to call interference

Ok, and the ump saw it as interference, it's called a judgement call for a reason. Was it the correct call? Maybe, maybe not, but according to the ump it was interference

I was at a wedding so missed the play but from the screen shot earlier it was the wrong call
Jones made a play and the ball was not in his reach

Sorry, I'm not arguing the call at hand.
quote:I'm sure there are some instances when it can be called that way, but not in this case. If the fielder boots the ball but keeps it in front of him and the runner makes no attempt to avoid a nearly stationary fielder, I can hear an argument for interference. That was not the situation in this case.
I'm laughing at the fact that you said that interference can't be called if the fielder misplays the ball.

It was close.... But in reality, it's all a moot point because the guy was tagged out anyway....

No cause obstruction woulda been called on jones

Dude, I coach high school baseball. That was NOT intereference. Watch the replay douche bag. He booted the ball first and then the collision occured.
Poor BushLeagueCityTiger, just cause you played community college ball and didn't have the talent to be a real player but make yourself feel better by saying at least you love the game and know the rules and you can teach your players the game in the hopes they have a chance to make it to the show; doesn't even slightly allow you be such a pretentious and self-righteous all knower of baseball because you are so clearly wrong, so I feel sorry for you because being a high school baseball coach and an a-hole while in probably some shitty west texas dirt hole has to be rough and if you are so wrong about the simple rules of baseball that your life so desperatley clings then what do you have to live for?

quote:You are correct. This is not the argument. All I am arguing is that LSU got a break on a questionable call. I personally think it was the wrong call but I'll take it b/c I want LSU to win.

at contact the ump either calls it interference or obstruction. The tag or no tag is after and irrelevant I believe.

I didnt see the play live but from the screen shots I think this guy is right

Ah your right... Too many beers!!!!

Anyway, thanks for the conversation guys. Geaux tigers and have a good night all!!!

It was close but I don't think you can absolutely say that jones couldn't make a play after the alleged boot of the ball....
Ump made the right call.... More times than not, the runner needs to avoid contact in that situation on the fact of perception alone...

I agree with the 2nd part but from the screen shot in this thread the ball was a few feet behind him

Nothing like a good debate on the rules of baseball.... that's why the game is great...

I think screen shots aren't an accurate indicator, if you rewind it 2 or 3 frames back initial contact is still being made but the ball is under his feet.

If the ball was that close to him when contact was made then the call was correct
Posted on 3/12/11 at 12:02 am to Factsman
I just think it was all too close in regards to the rules interpretation that the ump had to call the interference.... I think in that exact instance, interference will be called 9/10 times.. I agree with you guys argument but I dont think the evidence was overwhelmingly in that particular favor to call it your way... Either way, I'd hate to have to make that call myself...
