So far he hasn't since he's running a modern offense and already made major changes defensively when things weren't working.

He’s athletic (not JD great with his legs) and could offer more opportunities running himself (fake handoffs, misdirection, etc).

Yeah, I remember him getting into games a couple of years ago and being surprised by his mobility. He's more athletic than folks think who don't recall that. I'm just wondering if it's a super conscious effort to not run because I think he would not embarrass himself if he did.

I wonder if it's a bit more strategic than that.

By all accounts, Nuss is a pretty cerebral QB/player. It wouldn't surprise me if he's trying to focus on improving his pocket presence by forcing himself to read defenses for passing opportunities instead of running.

Running QB's can make it in the NFL, but you have to have talent like Lamar or Jayden before a pro team will take a flyer on you. All the other QB's that get drafted high get drafted because of their passing and game management skills.

Realistically, Nuss has (at most) two years to improve and put some tape out there that shows he's worth a high draft pick as a pro QB.

Don't get me wrong, he should still pull one or two runs a game, but I think he's intentionally forcing himself to look for passing opportunities at every possibility.

Thoughts?

They may have told him not to run and take damage whenever possible just because we are toast if Nuss goes down. At least with JD, if he went down, you had a competent backup in Nuss behind him. If Nuss goes down, Rickie is still really green and Swann couldn't beat him out.

I think this is your answer. They just aren’t confident enough in the backups winning SEC games to lean into him running. I wouldn’t mind it once or twice per game, but just look at what happened to Sellers Saturday. He’s a big, true dual-threat guy and went down after getting hit a few times. Nuss was already limping at times from hits taken in the backfield.

If it weren’t for some questionable technicalities on the horse collar

The one pick 6 was a bad read missing the dropping safety. They showed it on the broadcast. He was lucky to get the penalty call (which I actually agreed with) and get another chance on that drive. But this and maybe one other play (a throw to Sampson on the outside that was low and away, but the defense sniffed it out and could have made a play on a better throw) were the only times he really put the ball in harms way. Considering all the big throws he was forced to make under more pressure than usual, it’s hard to complain too much about one read.

The horsecollar clearly CAUSED that pick. I don’t know what you are even talking about there. The grab came from behind as well, so what could Nuss have done to prevent that? That one was definitely not on his decision making.

Exactly right! Nuss was extending the play, waiting for a receiver to break open and got horse-collared just as he threw the ball. Can't pin that one on him. If you have to blame someone, blame the line that failed to keep the Cock defender off his back.

Same dips who said he needs to scramble more and be cool under pressure then blamed him for this play and said he should eat the sack at the first sign of heat. Almost like nothing he does will ever be right for them.

Armchair QB's who want perfection from a college kid in his first year as QB1. They're conflating Kelly's year 3 with Nuss' year 1, and their impatience with the former is bleeding on to the latter.

I said in another thread that I think some of what you're seeing from Nuss is him intentionally trying to improve as a pocket and situational passer. That's why I think (just my opinion) he's not running.

This is his first year as a full-timer under center. He's got some work to do to figure out and develop his final playing style, and I'm willing to give him that time. Burrow and Daniels got that first year to improve (Daniels got three games into his second year as well).

Nuss should get at least the same leeway, and to expect more at this point is simply bad judgement and a bad position to hold. In my opinion, of course.

Agree he needs to take off when the field is open for 10 yards.....then slide.
