The loss to ole miss in 2001 when saban and jimbo were way too conservative and were loudly booed. After that game lsu opened up the offense and had its best offense ever which led to the 1st top 10 finish in a long time.

I walked out of there that night saying to my buddies... "You can't do shite with 3 SEC losses"

Having lived in Knoxville over the last decade, I know they trace the beginning of their downfall to the loss to LSU in the '01 SECCG. That always warms my heart.

Upset of Tennessee in 2000. Upsetting them next year to win the SECCG was the next-level step, and then beating Georgia twice in 2003 to get to the national title game (and then beating OU to win it all) solidified LSU as a national power

Was at that game. Still hate tenn for hitting Rohan out of bounds. Enjoyed chunking sugar cubes onto the field though.

I got pepper sprayed in the face that night. Totally worth it though

The hiring of Saban was the turning point

I know Saban turned the program around. I'm talking about which game was it that the nation realized that lsu has landed.

Landed how? As a good team again, an SEC factor, or a national factor?

It was a loss to Tenn in the regular season that LSU came alive in the second half. 2001 I think. I dont remember, I do remember being on a project in Ashland,ms. during the SECCG and winning money from all the Tenn fans and laughing in their face. Also some of my old friends had printed up T-shirts with a tiger smoking a cig and calling for the next volunteer and in the background the Tn football team with their pants around their ankles standing in line. I wore that shirt to work everyday leading up to the game.

IMHO and I have followed LSU football for some time, this was clearly one of the key moments that turned us from a top 15-20 program to a top 5
program..led to first major bowl since 1988, first sec champ since 88 (tie) and GREATLY increased TAF's ability to raise $$$ to build new facilties etc as people had to join to get tickets..the food fight for Sugar Bowl tix that year was insane....

It turned when Troy Twillie brought back the Magic.

Turning point was when Kevin Faulk signed LOI. We were already on an upswing for all the previous mentioned moments. Until he signed, we were in a downward spiral.

This is when it all changed. The correct answer.

I can't see any one game as a launching point but four top 5 denardo recruiting classes including a number one could abe class had everything to do with it !

I guess national factor.
well then either the 03 SECCG or the BCS win over OU. I'm leaning more toward the BCS win.

Agree with the UT 2000 votes. Prior to that game, the decline had resumed with the final 2 DiNardo years and culminating with the UAB loss. In addition to what others said, the UT 2000 game environment was unreal. Especially OT heading into the student section. Couldn't talk for 3 days and still have a piece of Tiger Stadium turf in the study at home.
UGa 2003 took us to the next level. That game was even more unreal including the crowd willing the team to win during the TV timeout before the kickoff return towards the end of the game.
But as far as turning point, UT 2000 has to be the game that changed the course.

Related Note of Thread:
The Ole Miss loss of 1997 was the beginning of the end of the Dinardo era.
Joe Dean was reluctant to fire Dinardo even in '99 but the deed had to be done.
I was not expecting a win over UT at the SECCG in 2001, but we got it done.
The 2 events I mention here in the thread are noteworthy defining moments in the program.
