Was Steele a 1 year hire all along?

This may have been discussed, but I don't remember seeing it.

But the way it went down and the way Aranda was hired really quickly makes me wonder if something happened last year that stopped Miles from getting Aranda, but all involved (Miles, Steele, Aranda) knew that Steele was just here for 1 year regardless.

I really think so. No way Steele to Auburn and Aranda to LSU all happened in just a matter of days.

If Miles managed to destroy his boss, the president of the LSU system, and dupe Auburn into hiring Steele as part of a grand plan, he needs to be president, not the LSU football coach.

Only difference is last year our AD did all he could to force miles out, and he botched the attempt and now miles has all the cards and we were allowed to offer a real contract to Aranda

We were not taken seriously with the laundry list of legit candidates that came out last year because of the Miles clause

I don't mean this was genius move by Miles.

I just wonder if Miles wanted Aranda last year but for whatever reason they couldn't make it happen at the time, was there a backdoor agreement to bring Steele in for 1 year then go back after Aranda.

Meaning, regardless of the AU thing, Steele was not coming back anyway and we were getting Aranda this time around?

This. Alleva has to be on board because his arse is on the line as well. Hopefully the AD and head coach can pull in the same direction now, that hasn't happened since 2011.

Yes, of course. I mean, there's no way that jet fuel can melt steel, right? And there had to be a second shooter on the grassy knoll.

Miles won the war. He executed his move in true cosa nostra fashion, slaying multiple adversaries in a short period time which resulted in a true consolidation of power. (Whether it results in on the field success is another story). I tip cap to him as he is now Don of the LSU Athletic Family.

You might have something there.

If you are in a high level executive job, you learn to not over react; you plan your moves. With that in mind I believe (just me, no inside information) that Alleva was planning to dump Miles at the end of the regular season last year. His stance on Chavis' new contract sort of bears this out. Alleva knew that putting the "Miles clause" in the contracts of new hires would be poison pill. None of the highly regarded DC candidates would agree to that and Alleva knew that.

Steele on the other hand was anxious to reurn to the DC position somewhere and needed a leg up from his Bama job. Auburn was a distant dream with Boom there. Everybody thought that Boom would get another HC gig sooner or later. So Steele accepts the LSU deal knowing that it might be just for a single year either because there was a good likelihood that Miles gets canned or Boom goes away.

When Alleva's power play blew up in his face, the handwriting was on the wall for Steele. Miles now had the power he needed to bring in someone else. I have no doubt that Miles was in contact with Aranda the day after the aTm game. Boom's bail out to USCe opened the door for Steele's brother to smooth the way.

Yep. I'm also surprised that Miles admitted to interviewing him last season. Makes me wonder if Aranda wanted a certain amount of money, Alleva disapproved, and finally green-lighted the amount this year.

That would explain Les saying they "couldn't have done it without Alleva"

Aranda probably balked at the Miles clause last year. Now that Alleva has been castrated, our DC will have a 3 year deal with guaranteed money.

Steele likely wasn't hired as a one year coordinator--if he wanted to go back to the state of Alabama for retirement, he likely told Les in advance and kept it under wraps; if les wanted to fire him, he probably told him to look elsewhere as he did with crowton and had time to line up Aranda.

Either way, I doubt this was all planned out a year ago, just like I doubt Auburn came
In and pulled Steele out from under us without any warning.
