Cardiomyopathy, an enlargement of the heart muscle that sometimes causes sudden cardiac arrest. I was diagnosed with the same thing in fall of 2020 and the first thing I thought of was Wally Pontiff Jr when I got the diagnosis. 300,000 people die of it each year, many of them in their sleep once their heart rate decreases, and sometimes it’s slow enough to the point of no return while sleeping. It’s kind of terrifying to be honest.

Kind of terrifying? That would ruin my ability to fall asleep. Godspeed baw. Hope you are taking care of yourself

Was in the elevator with my wife at Women's Hospital with my 2 day old son about to bring him home for the first time when some random stranger asked if I'd heard about Wally. I couldn't believe it.

LSU has had more than its share of tragedies regarding athletes, but this one stands out.

The older I get it’s starting to get hard putting LSU baseball number #2 behind football. Such good memories with Wally

Can remember everything exactly that morning when I got the call.

These things are so crazy--I can remember the exact spot where I was when I found out.

I was driving in BR and turned on the beginning of Buddy Songy's show on 1210. I can't remember if it started at noon or 1. But I was at the end of I-12 and exited to get on I-10 east. I was on the overpass that loops around when Buddy gave the news. I actually had to pull off at the Essen exit and stop driving so I could process it.

The first year after diagnosis was rough, especially the first few months. I was an absolute train wreck behind closed doors but since then, with the help of miracle drug Entresto, I’ve gained back enough heart strength to be considered “normal”. The diagnosis remains and I’m still on the medication, though. My cardiologist wants to see if I plateau or continue to improve. I’m not out of the woods but I’m in a drastically better position now than in October 2020. I won the lottery by finding out about it when I did. Many, like Wally Pontiff, have not been so lucky.

Exact same story with me…though I got diagnosed when I had a stroke because of it.

This blew me away. I know what that means…Jesuit of Shreveport guy (long time ago). What an outstanding young man he was. “Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord…”
